Comment:

Love Lenny, hated his perspective class. Learned a lot, but it got repetitive after a while. He's the guy to go to if you want to learn realism and technical skill. I wouldn't take his drawing class again but I would take an elective with him. I disagree with some of his philosophies about art/industry/life, but I liked hearing his perspectives.

He is a good person on the inside. My only problem with his teaching is that he uses fear/intimidation to motivate people. However, don't let these reviews scare you into not taking the class. Don't ever miss out on a learning opportunity because you are afraid you won't be able to handle it. If you fail, at least you tried. And you will grow.

Top rate teacher. Your technical skills in value & perspective can grow immensely. Lenny is clear about what he wants from assignments- listen and execute and you'll do fine, but you'll learn more the harder you try. However- stress level is high and I don't recommend this class for the emotionally unstable. SERIOUSLY consider what you can handle.

Lenny's assignments are DEATH. He will work you to DEATH. You will DIE. BUT you do learn a LOT about how to draw even if you think you're already proficient. He will point out 5000000 problems with your drawing abilities. Amazing teacher but the stress load is up to you to decide whether it's worth it or not.

If you're a realist, he'll like you. Technicality is key. You will learn a lot about perspective and shading. Very stressful class, very demanding teacher. One of the TA's I had was cocky and not very friendly. Seems more sure of his abilities than (I) think he should be.

He can be intimidating, but his methods of strict instruction allow everyone to apply discipline to their art. He is clear, precise, witty, and pushes your work; making sure you understand what was wrong with it. He does not teach students his perspective of art, he promotes self growth and strengthens basic skills and the art's common knowledge.

Lenny is not as difficult as everyone thinks he is. His directions and visions are very clear. People say you can't be creative in his assignments because of the strict requirements he expects in drawings, but I personally thought these strict rules really pushed me to be more creative; expressing your originality is what Lenny challenges you with.

Lenny's a great guy to have as a drawing teacher. He'll really improve your skills, and he is very understanding if you have a problem. That being said, try not to have a problem! :) Requires all of your time to complete assignments well, so keep that in mind. Great guy with great taste in music!

Class should be called "Discipline for Illustrators." You will learn to render in graphite, along with a very "by the book" take on perspective. Doesn't seem to know the theory behind what he teaches, only concrete facts. He will improve your professionalism, but not really your drawing skills. Does not communicate well and is rather close minded.

He's alright,not great. It's nice that he is somewhat challenging, but considering the little time you have at RISD his classes are not worth your time. His classes often yield work begins to become CRAFTY and KITCH,because that is his sensibility. I love that he tries to be challenging,but he is NOT WORTH YOUR VERY LIMITED AND PRECIOUS TIME.

A lot of the people here seem to have missed the point of this profs. teachings! Yeah hes strict and demanding and you might not be able to put stuff into your portfolio but -he even admits it- all he does is refine your skills- A LOT. So dont expect beautiful art- expect experience and open up your mind- dont insist on your artsy artfreedom-rights

I'm suprised Lenny's gotten such bad ratings.. I loved his class! sure hes hard and gives what seems like impossible assignments but you couldnt ask for better way to teach illustration (draw 8 people, a dog, a wagon, house, bike, etc, etc.) plus he's hysterical

Lenny requests that you restrain your creative ability and do the assignments he gives. However, if you don't make it interesting he will be upset. These pieces will not be what you like... they will never be in your portfolio... they will be thrown away and you may not learn anything. Beware this teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got nothing out of his class. I don't draw the way he makes you draw. He got me so wound up and nervous that everything I did was crap. He is a funny guy, but a miserable teacher unless you do exactly what he tells you to.

Lenny is a demanding teacher, so slackers beware! He is loud and fun; he can be brutal in crits, but he is fair and understanding if you just talk to him. He gives students one-on-one time if necessary to solve problems.

take lenny for any junior or senior level class. he invests a lot into the class and everyone i talked to got a lot out of it in return. he is a genuinely cool guy, but the class isn't easy. even though he says he won't remember your name after 20 mins
