He is extremely passionate about music education. Because I was so passionate and willing to work hard we got along extremely well. Be aware that he will demand that you work hard or you won't be successful with him.

After teaching for almost a decade thinking I couldn't do it because of Hicken's horrible attitude towards me and teaching I have FINALLY come out from under his "spell" and realized the beginnings of my teaching potential. No thank you Dr. Hicken. Be wary of this man...he only cares about himself.

Dr. Hicken has his favorites, if you're not one of those, pray hard. He will do anything to help those that do things to help his program, but doesn't care about his students equally. Not very good at advising, and not very personable. He tricks you into coming and then leaves you hanging.

Very qualified on paper. Not very good at his job, IMO. The band got worse while I was there, IMO, and since I wasn't his "yes man" I could feel the tension. His "are you sure you can do it?" attitude is stifling to say the least. I could feel my confidence waining under him because of his attitude and approach to students.

I thought Dr. Hicken was a good conductor and well organized, but once I graduated he refused to help me out. I never had any problems with him in his classes. I thought his recommendation would help me get a job, but he did nothing to help.

He rocks, and is willing to do anything for you to make sure that you get what you need, EVEN AFTER YOU GRADUATE, he still looks after you. Forever one of my favorite!!!
