Very boring, very narrow minded, no in class discussion, not very insightful, learn very little about the text, goes off on long irrelevant tangents, very easy to fall asleep in class. He's a sweet guy but he's not a very good professor.

Post-Bates I did doctorate work in lit. I trudged through much trendy lit theory. Today, I look back with fondness on his teaching style--he's simply a great lecturer, he talks about literature, not trends. He taught to all levels of interest with ease!

Got the feeling that he never read my thesis; this guy was totally more interested in his perspective than being an educator in any sense of the word. Intelligent - absolutely, but unfortunately, this is not enough to make a teacher out of anyone.

I can't reiterate it more...a great guy with a wealth of knowledge and acute sense of humor. The class is mainly lecture-based which isn't always good for an English class but everything he says is always insightful
