Dr. Benson is a very energetic professor who makes you laugh during class. Would not recommend taking his class though. We spent 14 of 17 weeks talking about the native Americans in a class that was supposed to be: Early North America to 1877. Topics not discussed: The revolutionary war, articles of confederation, the constitution, etc.

A lot of homework assigned and then never discussed. Tests are super detailed and class is unorganized. On the other hand, Benson is super caring and really puts the effort to make sure students are enjoying and care about what they are learning. Sweet guy. Just get ready to read all the time.

If you enjoy history take Dr. Benson's classes. He truely is a dynamic and engaging professor. I have taken him for classes which I thought would be "gimmes" because of my knowledge of the subject matter, and found myself challenged with new material and different perspectives. If you can take him for a Civil War era class you will not regret it.

Dr. Benson is the sweetest person! He genuinely cares about all of his student's well being and is always willing to help! He is constantly coming up with new creative ways to learn the material. Dr. Benson is super generous and is really enthusiastic about North American history.

Dr. Benson is not very clear with the assignments nor is he the most organized. We were often expected to read lengthy books in a night which we discussed briefly. Also, the research paper was worked on for 2 months and we only received feedback in the last 2 weeks. He can be helpful but you need to force it out of him. There was an exam.

Dr. Benson is one of the most frustrating professors I've ever had. he assigns hours and hours of reading not mentioned in class yet tests only on that material. his lectures are too confusing and stupid for a very history wise student. please please do not take this man and save yourself from hours of reading pointless articles every night

Tough teacher but great guy, really helpful if you go in and ask him questions, hell even tell you books to check out for your paper. overall hell like you if you talk in class and provide original insights. tests can be hard, but just do the reading, most of it is short documents anyways. really excited guy

Horrible teacher for FYW. assigns a ton of pointless reading that we never talk about in class and then puts it on the final.Very very hard grader and its impossible to get an A. He knows alot about the CIvil War and is very condescending on those who dont. he is just a difficult man to reason with in general and out of touch with reality sometimes

Dr. Benson is very enthusiastic about teaching and takes interest in his students. His tests are difficult and generally all over the place. You must keep up with all the work (which is a bit excessive) or else your grade will definitely suffer. Hard to get an A but hard to get a D as well. B's and C's are very common.

I hate history in general, but Prof. Benson is so enthusiastic, I just loved this class! He is a generous grader who gives a lot of partial credit. He is VERY helpful if you are only willing to ask. There are several assignments that might not be clear to you at first - ask for help! If you do the work and participate, you should get an B+/A.

Really passionate about history and this is the only reason i found this class almost kinda interesting. However, theres a ridiculous amount of online reading that he hardly ever discusses in class that will surprise you on the tests. He also lives on coffee and drinks so much of it that he talks really fast and doesnt stay on one topic for long.

Benson was great! He was excited about the subject and very eager to help. Only drawback was that there was a lot of work involved, but compared to my friends' FYW, I had it easy. I would love to take another class from him due to the amount I learned. Such a nice, funny guy.

Benson is a funny guy. He gets so excited about random things. There is a good bit of reading but you dont need to do it all. Tests are mostly based on class discussions and usually he graded pretty easy on the tests
