Comment:
I had Lynda in freshman year for a short stories class and again for my senior thesis, which I dreaded taking in the fall because she was my only option. I had already had a bad experience with her and she only proved me right a second time. She refused to be of any outside help no matter what I did. Only gave condescending responses to my drafts.

Lynda Hall spends most of class time talking about the class instead of actually doing the work. Once she finally gets around to discussing the subject matter, she lets the class get away from her by letting everybody ramble on about nothing. Any kind of learning is expected to be done, for the most part, on your own. Plus it's a ton of work.

Dr. Hall is very caring and will work with you; however, she is a tough grader. I took her 200 level class and she graded me as if it were a 300/400 level one. She is picky, lectures are all over the place and rarely cover the readings you were assigned. You have to do the readings, there are tedious quizzes.

Lynda is a great prof who really cares about her students. As long as you do your best and get started on the papers early you will be golden. She posts ALL your grades on blackboard quickly and efficiently - which is very different from most profs!! She's honestly great and she gives great feedback. Never got below a 95 on one of her papers.

I have no idea how Hall grades papers. I got a 96 on one paper, and the next I got a 68. She gives good lectures and assigns good readings, but you will not do well in her class unless you regurgitate what she said in her lecture. Forget originality and creativity if you take her.

You can get away without reading but it definitely helps you with the papers she assigns. If you go to her she will help you but don't expect her to lay it all out for you. Quizzes, midterm, and final are online (yes she lets you look up answers) and 2 short papers and one research paper. The research paper is a little difficult but not too bad.

DON'T take this class. Hall is one of the worst teachers I've had at Chapman. She is such a harsh grader, I've gotten A's on paper with many other teachers like Esdale and Levin while receiving AWFUL grades on very similar papers in her class. The discussions are based on her opinion, she does not have the ability to see things from other views.

Very harsh grader, wants you to write about what she thinks, not what you think. Doesn't help to teach lit students to form their own opinions or analyses. I think she means well but I don't think any lit class should be taught this way.

literally the harshest grader ever. i'm a creative writing major and i've been praised for my writing, but i've never gotten higher than a c on any of her papers. went to her office hours and went up to a b-. ridiculous. attendance is mandatory, the class is discussion based, and so incredibly boring. do yourself a favor and DON'T take this class.

great class. make sure you agree with her, and speak your mind often, but make sure you are right. Recommend sparknotes along with stories to ensure that you have something intelligent to say. Very harsh grader on midterm and final, but very lenient on research. Overall great class and teacher. take this for GE.

make sure to suck up to hall and agree with everything she says or your grade will automatically drop by 10%. she pretty vulgar and isn't as smart as her job title suggests. i'm an english major and i've gotten A's on multiple papers from o'brien/ lehnhof/ yeager/ vanmeter/esdale etc.. but never in her class. she's insanely harsh for no reason

I had Professor Hall for Major Authors: Austen. She was amazing. Although a harsh grader it pushes you to improve your writing. She was very available and always willing to help, not to mention extraordinarily engaged and intelligent in the subject. Recommended for those who want to be challenged.

If you have a choice, don't take this class or any other she teaches. Hall is a nice person, but that doesn't change the fact that grades are based upon attendance and agreement with her views, while none of the assignments will teach you anything. Hall really only inspires students to take shortcuts and lose interest in subjects they once loved

In this class, all she does is talk, talk, talk. She has no idea what she's talking about most of the time, but expects you to agree with her. Her papers are graded very harshly, and there is nothing valuable to be taken from attending classes. Oh wait, attendance is mandatory... It feels like high school all over again. Don't take this class.

I enjoyed this class. It can get a little boring but it is one of my most memorable classes of the semester. She grades harshly on papers but they aren't worth that much. Tests/Quizzes were online and easy! You can take them at home and you are allowed to consult your book, the internet, and others. The finals too!

Banned Books sounds like it will be a fun class. It's actually extremely boring and you don't learn much. It's supposedly discussion-based, too. Unfortunately, she doesn't realize what "discussion" means; just answer her questions one at a time and if your answer differs from hers, she'' criticize it. She grades based on who she likes, also.

I had Professor Hall for Banned Books, and she is awesome. She's really funny, and even though her class can get a little boring sometimes (there's a lot of talking), at least the material is interesting. Definitely read the book, and participate as much as you can in class discussion without making a fool out of yourself. It's worth it.

Avoid this class at all costs. She IS offensive. She cares too much about things unrelated to fiction, like MLA formatting. Her class structure is totally dysfunctional. Students do most of the work through "discussion leadership" which is pointless. Her grading is a mystery. I didn't learn about fiction. Waste of tuition & time, for sure.
