Comment:
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Professor Melfi made me wish I wasn't an English major. Unhelpful and un-encouraging. When talking about the readings, she often notes how no student could have possibly read as closely as she did. She is not openminded, does not want to work with her students. Just wants to hear her own regurgitated opinions.

Professor Melfi is fantastic! She's really passionate and had a lot of interesting things to say. If you have an interest in Psychology and need to meet an English requirement, I highly recommend her Narcissism in Literature class. There's a lot of reading, but it's worth it. I'd definitely take another class from her.

Melfi is a fantastic professor who will listen to your participation in her class and provide meaningful responses that are both positive and constructive. She's accessible and a great professor to go to for help with writing, and she always gives clear feedback for grading that makes an A/B not too difficult.

Professor Melfi is terrible. Do not take her class. She thinks she honors others' opinions, but when a student provides their perspective in class it is simply a test as to whether your opinion is right or wrong, rather than a genuine thought. She grades harsh and is not willing to help whether you participate and work for it or not. Avoid.

I really loved this class. Melfi is big on the romantics and she gives the text so much more meaning than I would have ever been able to decipher on my own. Lectures flew by and she always makes you feel validated by giving respect to your opinion. She made me fall in love with British Literature & I'll take future classes with her. She's brilliant

Professor Melfi gives clear and somewhat interesting lectures. It is obvious that she enjoys the material herself, but it is difficult for her to get her students enthused. I didn't love the content of the class, but it was do-able.

Professor Melfi is, by far, my favorite professor. I have taken three classes with her (BritLit2, ModFic, and PsychMotifs) and actively seek out more. She is cheery, helpful, polite, and knows what she's talking about. She makes you feel validated, and is reasonable about extensions. Lectures are engaging. If you're a good student, you'll get an A.

Not sure what people are saying about Melfi here but I went into the class with extremely low expectations because of this site. She's a nice person and listens to everyone (does NOT pick favorites as mentioned) and is a really easy grader. There are 2 papers and a final and the rest is participation so try to be insightful and you'll do well

She was a horrible professor and was very unhelpful in office hours. You get a good grade on her papers if she likes you, and you will not if she doesn't like you. She is the reason I changed my mind about majoring in English.

She is a very sweet lady and my a very brilliant helpful professor. She really helps you to understand the material and is more than willing to help on papers. That being said, if you don't do your work, or start your papers the night before you will not do well in this class and probably won't like her either.

Melfi is a lovely woman, extremely friendly and receptive to students who show interest. Reading list for modern brit lit was excellent. 2 papers, a presentation 2 pop quizes and a final, all fairly graded. she does allow lots of discussion so class can be pretty fluffy. not wm's finest prof but I would recommend her!

Melfi was a nightmare of a teacher. She allowed student discussion, but would shut down opinions that differed from hers immediately. Her grading was extremely subjective, and she doesn't permit rewrites. Attendence makes a difference with your final grade, but I feel like I learned nothing in this class that I couldn't have found on sparknotes.

I'm sure she's a nice person, but she doesn't let students have much of an opinion. Wordsworth is a prophet, and everything we read had to do with him (this got old, fast). If you have an opinion that is different from hers, she will tell you that you're wrong. Also, I'm tired of hearing that nature is a cure all for depression from her.

Melfi is the worst professor I have had to date at William and Mary. She is not a good lecturer: she has a very quiet, monotone voice, agrees with everything every student says, and does not lead discussion effectively. Her comments on papers are not accurate or helpful. This class literally made me want to fling myself out the window.

Prof. Melfi is awesome. She is open to pretty much any new ideas concerning the text s long as you can back yourself up.Grading is somewhat unclear but she is very helpful and lovessss when you come to her after class to discuss the material. Definitely recommend Narcissism in Lit- obviously her favorite class to teach

Melfi is fair, concise and a compassionate person. I don't think she plays favorites. She's a great moderator of class discussions and she keeps class interesting. If you work hard and have talent, you'll do well in the class. Don't take her courses if you hate to write.

If you can read Melfi's mind, take this class. However, you will be bored out of your mind since class discussions are boring and useless. Grading is incomprehensible. Best advice: get on her good side by participating in class. If you're not on her good side, then good luck at any sort of decent grade!

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Melfi is a horrible lecturer, does not encourage different ideas in class, and is a harsh grader. Only if you say exactly what she wants to hear will you get a good grade.
