Marcia Ian made me hate English. If that doesn't say enough, help me god. Took her for 20th century fict. to fulfill requirements- she is very condescending to all her students when they try to participate. Really makes me think she wants her students to fail. AVOID. AT. ALL. COSTS. Probably the biggest mistake I've made at RU. She is just mean.

I took this professor despite her bad reviews. Big effing mistake. Her lectures were so abstract they made zero sense, plus she was condescending when I participated in class. I'm not a burnout who can't handle hard work, I'm a solid student. This class wasn't hard, it was... nonsense. Do NOT take this professor. The opposite of an easy A.

I can honestly say that Marcia Ian is the only teacher I have ever had who makes me feel like she wants her students to fail. She enjoys making her class more difficult than it has to be. I'm in her psychoanalytic lit theory class. She is a harsh grader, and seems to brag about how poorly her students do on her exams. Avoid at all costs.

I had Professor Ian for Psychoanalytic Lit Theory. The class is difficult and requires close reading but Ian is brilliant and enthusiastic. Most people dismiss Freud and give up on the class from the start, unwilling to give the ideas a chance. This befuddles me. Why take a class on an idea if you disregard it before engaging with it? Silliness.

Wonderful professor. Much more intelligent than most of her students, she teaches things that baffle those who aren't willing to read the material. Willing to help others and made me think about things in a whole new way. My favorite teacher by far! If you work hard, you will be rewarded.

Terrible Professor. Teachings based on scientific facts with little room for discussion. Always15min late to class yet attendance is mandatory. Never engages with students. Grading system is based on if she agrees with you-never know what you are going to get. Book list is great, but she is not. AVOID!!

She constantly get's mad, frustrated, and flustered. She can't communicate what she wants and keeps everything extraordinarily dry. If she was my intro to literature, I would hate reading, and that's saying something because I don't know what I'd do without my books. I love them.

WORST PROFESSOR EVER! She's always late to class and is not very good with engaging the classroom in discussion. Often times there were many awkward silences in class whenever she raised a point that no one could relate to. She is not a hard grader tho, but there are not many opportunities to prove your understanding of the material.

I studied with Ian when she was at UVA. She's the chief reason I went into academia myself. She was encouraging, helpful, demanding, and completely invested in her students. She challenged students to think for themselves. In short, she was exactly what a teacher should be.

I took her seminar on 20th Century Lit and Cult back in the Spring of 2009, but clearly, she has not improved in her teaching abilities or her narrow-minded thinking. Even if you come to class having read the material, prepared to discuss, she only deigns to hear you if you don't agree with her views. Useless.

Professor lectured ad nauseum about psychoanalytic readings of all of the texts, and never slowed down, except to ask students questions that no one could ever answer to her liking. She graded very harshly, and seemed to relish the ability to fail her students. Avoid her entirely.

The "dark side" of the English Department, Ian is out of her mind. Babbles and rants on for an hour about her own backwards, abstract and weird ideas. Boring books. Showed a complete lack of interest in her students. Unfair grader - if you aren't in line with her views. Consistently arrives late to class. Quite possibly the worst English professor.

One of the most beneficial and well read professors at Rutgers who helped me to grow as a reader, learner, and thinker. If you do not take these things seriously you probably will not enjoy her class. And no, there is no discrimination held against those who object to Freud, but instead a stimulating conversation.

Coming into this class, I hated Freud and idea of studying the mind to find one answer. Leaving this course, my disinterest only grew. The Prof. Ian is VERY nice and understanding, but she didn't seem to generate any interest for any students in the class. Avoid her if you want to learn how to create an interest in a subject your previously hated.

Her lectures are disjointed, incomprehensible ramblings. Her grades are not assigned fairly, and the workload is tremendous. You will not learn anything valuable, and you will be consistently stressed by what is an essentially meaningless class. The class sounded interesting, but sadly was not. For your own sake, avoid this professor.

had her for my English seminar. learned a lot and got a wonderful grade (after a semester full of Cs i pulled off an A on the last paper and she gave me an A for the course). the worst is that she was terribly mean and seemed to enjoy humiliating students whenever she had a chance.

Very possibly my least favorite professor at Rutgers so far. The same lecture over and over again on extremely boring novels. She practically worships Freud, and will find any excuse to connect a novel to him and his theories. The kicker is that she's a very tough grader, which I wouldn't mind if the class wasn't so boring. AVOID!

This woman is useless. She floats around in her own little world; she should not be a professor. Her grading is impossible, her lectures are meandering, and her comments on papers are, at best, not helpful. If you tell her that you disagree with her precious Freud, your grade is doomed. Possibly my worst experience at Rutgers - stay far away.

Not only was the selection of books she chose for the class (save one) boring, dense, and thick, but she seemed to eventually show the same lack of interest in the material as her own students. To top of all this, her tests can be unnecessarily difficult. Complete waste of time and energy. All you will get out of her class is pain. Stay away.

She was my TA when I was an undergrad at UVA. She's one of the chief reasons I went to graduate school. A wonderful mentor and truly invested in her students. If you put the work into her courses, you won't be disappointed. She will do everything in her power to help you to succeed and to grow intellectually.
