Class felt like forever, but I definitely learned a lot. You really have to share her interest in the material to get along with her.

Comment:
Lectures are long, meandering, and relate only in vague terms to the actual material that will be graded; attendance is mandatory and kept track of, and therefore you are expected to go and listen to this lengthy, dull overview of history topics with little real discussion of merit of the readings. There are NO quizzes; only grades are three papers

Comment:
Although Professor Norton is knowledgable in her field, the information she was trying to teach to us was not presented in a comprehensible way. Her strategy is to teach off primary sources, so it had potential to be very interesting. Instead, the material became very hard to follow and I didn't feel like i learned anything about actual history.

Comment:
She is super boring and really dry. She seems genuinely interested in her topic of choice, but again, very dry. Also a little mean and will call you out if you are wrong. She likes class participation and will learn your name, but unless you're really really really interested in ancient European history, I would not take this class.

Comment:
Norton is extremely knowledgable about the field and does an amazing job of covering a huge expanse of material in a lot of depth. She's not an easy grader, but is very clear about what she expects (strong analysis of primary sources, good grammar, proper citation format), and she's extremely willing to help if asked. I'd take her again.

Comment:
Prof. Norton is a decent professor. She is a harsh grader, and is very particular about your grammer, so much so that she will knock your grade on a paper down a letter grade purely based on grammer. The class was fairly interesting, and she tries very hard to engage the students. Overall, I would say she is simply a "fair" professor.

took Western Civ. norton is a good teacher in that she cares about her subject and student's understanding but is often confusing because she presents information out of order and powerpoints are also all over the place. TA helped a ton. I would still recommend her and would personally take another class from her

Do the reading, go to class, meet with her- you'll do well. Complain about how much you hate the class and slack off- you'll do poorly. Simple.

Eh. Just ok. Can be frustrating at times. I will not say to avoid her at all costs, but if there is another option, seriously consider it before taking Norton.

Professor is more knowledgeable and clean than most of these comments suggest. She cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed in the class. Class requires moderate amount of reading and writing and going to class is definitely helpful. If you have an interest in Spanish history this class is probably worth taking.

Prof. either bored or incompetent: most likely bored. Her lectures disorganized, her slide-shows are unhelpful series of often irrelevant pictures. Often It's difficult to figure out what her point is. Tests, papers are easy enough. good TA LRM

There are some things to remember about this class. 1) Marcia Norton knows NOTHING. 2) The TA knows SO MUCH MORE. 3) She LOVES dropping "tobacco" and "chocolate", one lecture solely devoted to it. 4) Primary sources = IMPORTANT! 5) Norton loves going off on tangents. 6) Norton loves pretty pictures - which make up most lectures. 7) Don't go. Ever.

Professor Norton is the most unclear teacher I have ever had. Lectures are actually make you dumber, so do not bother attending. Midterm, final, 1 paper, and discussion make up your grade. PRIMARY SOURCES very imp! There is only one TA and she is a very fair grader. Not as interesting as I thought it was going to be, but definitely a GPA booster.

I went into this course thinking, "Hey this is gonna be a sweet ass course," and came out saying, "Why did I just pay money to take that class? I would have rather stabbed myself in the eye socket a billion times within a two minute time span then ever sit in her lecture again." Enough said.

Her lectures are so disjointed to the point of being incomprehensible. She wastes *so* much time talking in circles it's unbearable. Less than half the class showed up for lecture. If you're looking to actually learn history, stay away -- save your time and effort. I'm not sure if Professor Norton actually knows anything worth teaching.

Comment:
Lectures tedious at best (if you go you won't have to read the textbook though), but the discussion section is much more pertinent to the class. TA very knowledgeable. If you have any basic knowledge of European/World history and can pay attention and read primary source documents (main focus of tests), you will do fine.
