I had Dr. Karns over 30 years ago, and after all of those years, I remember her as one of the finest professors I had at the University of Dayton. I learned how to wrote in her very demanding classes. If you want to improve your mind and your knowledge of the world, take one of her classes. If you are looking for an easy elective, forget about.

I had Dr. Karns for 3 classes about 25 years ago. She is certainly an outstanding instructor. In her classes, I learned to think and write concisely. Dr. Karns is demanding and her expectations push you to develop your knowledge and thinging ability. If you are interested in developing your mind and your understanding of the world, sign up...

Dr. Karns is allowed to be demanding because she is just intimidatingly intelligent. I learned a lot from her even though the class stressed me out. My favorite part about her is when she allows students to ramble on with half-baked thoughts for up to 5 minutes. Very accommodating with my learning disability. Lovely professor!

By far the worst teacher I have ever had. Her class was impossible. She picked favorites, gave more reading than any class ever. Should have counted as a 10 credit class. DO NOT TAKE HER

Dr. Karns is a phenominal professor. Do not take her if you want to slack off, because you won't make it out alive. But if you want to learn, and that requires you work at it, she is the best. She is also very understanding, so if something is going on, you should let her know and she goes out of her way to help students/alter syllabus for you.

If you do the reading assignments, read a newspaper, and know something about the world, you will do fine. If you don't you would probably be screwed. Grades exams and short paper assignments difficult, looking for specific points. Grades term papers easy. You can't fake it because she knows EVERYTHING. has most awesome knowledge base on campus.

Her classes are excessively difficult. Perhaps she forgot that she is teaching undergraduates, not graduate students. She also comes off with a "I'm smarter than you'll ever be, so don't even try to say something clever" attitude. If you don't suck up to her, forget it. You'll get a C if you're lucky. Take another course!

Dr. Karns is a good professor to have if you're very interested in learning more about politics. For someone like me it was difficult because I did not have much of a background in POL. But she helped me and I made it out with a C. Theres lots of work but it's worth it. Read EVERYTHING!! Don't slack off.

Dr. Karns is not as tough as everyone makes her out to be. Her class entails a lot of work, but if you DO it, you're fine. She is incredibly knowledgable and I'm glad I got to take a class with her before she retires. If you have the chance to take her next semester, do it.

I had MPK for 4 semesters then went to grad school. I can honestly say I learned more in one class with MPK than two years of grad school. She's very passionate about teaching and about improving her own knowledge. And she cares.

I agree with the previous poster. Her classes are not for those who just want a passing grade on a transcript, but if you want to be challenged in class (and learn quite a bit), sign up for one of her sections straightaway.
