I love fantasty literature and I loathed this class. Half the time her lectures were not intelligible and other times she didn't explain anything properly. Oftentimes I would become more confused when reading books I'd previously studied. One of the worst classes I've ever taken, and the friend I took the class with agrees. I would not recommend it

For a Sophomore level course this class can be quite tough. It isn't a matter of the reading material however. A good portion of it has to do with the lecture. Tymoczko is very well read and quite intelligent, however her lectures can be unintelligible at times. If you take her Fantasy course I strongly suggest you approach her with questions.

She is extremely well-read and knows what she is talking about. Best of all is that she calls on people throughout class so you aren't just sitting there listening to her go on and on. Very tough grader.

Brilliant with a lot of work behind her, accounting for accusations about her being full of herself. Honestly, deal with it, because she is one of the best in her field and is understanding and knowledgeable if you just take the time to visit her and talk to her. She is open and will help you. She can be brutal, such is college life. Trust her!

To start with she's an incredibly smart professor. This class was a TON of work but I found it very rewarding. Participation and attendance are huge in this class! Generally, she enjoys hearing what you have to say about the topic and is open to various interpretations of the texts. Just know that she is very well read and doesn't tolerate BS.

When giving homework, she acts like you don't have any other classes. When she lectures, she uses so many quotes it's ridiculous, and you have to really be paying attention carefully to follow along. She could make any subject boring, and I found myself fantasizing about being somewhere else.

She talks so much that she loses herself and then repeats everything!!! She is so hard to follow and even when you do, she's always saying "you should be writing this down!!!" She's totally into herself, which makes her unhelpful. It would be a great course with another professor.

VERY full of herself and lacking social skills. Can't communicate easily with foreign students, which is a problem in graduate courses, and also ironic, because she claims to manage most European languages. "Yeah, right."

Tymockzo is one the most agile thinkers and teachers I met at UMass. I took most of her courses, undergrad to grad. Her flexibility let me bring diverse material to literary study (anthropology, for example) which rounded me out and made me think. Occas
