Mark is always really funny in class and we took good field trips. Never felt like I got clear feedback on my writing assignments, and the FYS was supposed to teach me how to adapt to college writing... He's a funny guy but sometimes gets distracted. Very passionate about his subject, which made me excited to come to class.

He is a very intelligent man but does not know how to teach. His lectures are extremely disorganized and often goes on tangents completley unrelated to the subject.

There is so much course material he doesn't actually teach. When you have lab you don't know how to use the equipment or answer the questions. However, when you're confused in lab he is very willing to help you. Sometimes he goes on tangents, but he's a really nice and approachable professor. The TA saves lives! Take advantage

While great for one-on-one learning and research, I find that Mark can be difficult to cope with in a class setting. However, if you spend a little time outside of class with him, it is much easier to understand his ramblings.

This class was the worst. Mark is a great guy, EXTREMELY intelligent, and definitely knows his stuff. I, on the other hand, actually needed to be taught. Assumes students know a lot about geology already even though it's a 100 level with no prereqs. The labs are impossible to do because they ask for more info than students know. Totally unrealistic

Wow.. I have never had a more ridiculous experience with a professor before. I don't think he actually taught anything in that class. Every day he would ramble about something completely unrelated to anything we had talked about the previous day.. If you aren't religious, he doesn't like you. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH THIS PROFESSOR !!!

He obviously is VERY intelligent and really enthusiastic when teaching. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming and he tends to go off-topic a bit, but generally interesting classes.

Although he may be smart, knowing "everything" does not equal a good teacher. This class was a complete waste of time for everyone involved. Mark was unprepared and seemed to make up the lecture as he went. occationally we seemed to touch on a relavant topic, but i think that was accidental. Do not take a class with him.

Mark's awesome. He didn't bring up any religious things in the jterm class he taught, but then again it was only for a month. He knows everything and you end up knowing it too!

Mark is a PHENOMENAL professor. He knows his stuff, and he loves it, and talkes about it with such a passion. He's a great teacher. Sure, he may work in a lot of religion into his classes, but they're still a lot of fun, and he doesn't try to make people believe anything thsy don't believe in. You don't know a good professor if you think he's bad!!

Mark is a genius. Geological brilliance at its best. If you read his books you will be intimidated, he sounds intellegent, collected, and very pasionate. When you meet him, the phrase WHAT THE FLIP comes to mind. He is your a typical mad scientist. He doesnt have required courses for his classes and SHOULD. He assumes you know what he knows. The one thing that truely stands out tho, is his genuine belief in the ability of his students.

i came in wanting to major in this subject. reading the book was the only thing i got from the class. unorganized lectures, unrealistic demands from students he hasn't taught anything. only thing that got me through the class was prior knowledge. nice man, should not be teaching.

mark is super awesome and definitely genius! yeah sometimes he can go off on random tangents and occasionally you have no idea what he is talking about, but he loves his work and that makes his classes awesome. i am not a geol major or minor but i would happily take more of his classes.

He'd be great as a fixture in the geology department, walking up and down the hall mumbling brilliance to himself and passing students. But avoid any class where he attempts to create assignments or test your retention of his unorganized ramblings.

Had the prof for other classes, enjoyed them immensely. This course...OH GOD. Didn't learn a thing, really, yet the midterm seemed to imply that he thought we were. Needs a lab, text book, his own lectures, etc. Majority of class (all?) felt simlar

Funny how we were learning about sedimentary rocks for an entire semester, and he never brought one to class. Oh, but there was one on the midterm. One he admited he himself could not identify.
