Comment:
While Professor Moyer means well, a lot of his lectures didn't make much sense, or help expand upon the readings we had. He has very specific grading criteria that he wants you to hit, or you won't do well, which is annoying. My biggest complaint with the class was that he didn't use blackboard, so I couldn't tell what my grades were the whole time

AVOID THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE. It is an extremely dry course which seems aimed to confuse students. Moyer is less than eloquent and has a very hard time staying on topic. His tangents about religion, morals, etc will wear you out tot he point where your eyes will begin to shut. Get ready for a pop quiz everyday. NOT JOKING when I say everyday. ):

Mark Moyer is a wonderful teacher. He is clearly passionate about the subject and it shows, making PHIL 111 a genuinely thought provoking delight! The pop quizzes are quite easy and help keep you on top of the readings and attendance. He is also very outgoing and loves to engage with students whether to help with class material or just to chat!

Horrid teacher that rambles and teaches opinion vs philosophy. Skips over what philosophers are talking about in lieu of random bits of their arguments. Be prepared to spend WEEKS on single sentences or ideas that are not philosophy. All grading is completely opinion based, marks off for grammar but cant be bothered to have proper grammar himself.

He was an awful teacher. He rambles forever, gets lost in his own stories and got distracted way too easily. There was a lot of readings and we barely covered everything in class

Mark Moyer was the worst professor I have ever had at UVM. His exams are based entirely on his opinions and his pop quizzes are impossible to do well on. For a class about free will.... there really wasn't any. I will forever regret taking his class.

I took Philosophy of Mind. Mark is not a bad teacher, but you will have to try to remain engaged. The subject matter is difficult to understand. If you stick with it and put forth minimal effort you will do well in this class. He does have a few "surprise quizzes" but other than that only a few easy HW assignments, a midterm, and a final.

I had professor Moyer for philosophy of the mind. He knew the subject extraordinarily well. He was very approachable and easy to talk to. The subject is hard, but I don't think that another professor would have taught it much better. Also, he loves juggling, talk to him about it!

If you don't have to take this class then avoid it! He is monotone and boring, so staying awake will be a struggle. I find him to be a bias grader so if you miss even one class he will make sure it shows up on your next graded assignment. Good luck if you do end up getting him as your professor.

He's a really nice guy and if you ask for help you will get it, but unless you're REALLY into the class, you won't enjoy it. There are a lot of readings and if you don't understand them crystal clearly then you won't do well on the exams. The homework is super tedious and hard to do well on. He's a good professor, but the class isn't interesting

Really nice guy and explains the easier things pretty well; however, seemed to repeat himself a lot when asked to clarify. Subject material was difficult as were the homeworks, you need to be good at forming arguments.

Puts heavy emphasis on the ability to make a clear argument. Thoroughly explains assigned readings in class, so you wouldn't actually have to read if not for pop quizzes. Your work needs to be clear and concise to get above a C. Repeats himself a lot. I spent all class watching people nod off then wake back up. However he's very helpful if you ask.

Mark teaches a fantastic advanced metaphysics class. While he sometimes can be a bit convoluted in his explanations, his demeanor towards the material and examples are both hilarious and helpful. He picks the best papers to study and has a great grasp on them. If you have the chance, TAKE THIS CLASS! Literally the most fun class I've taken at UVM.

Gives surprise quizzes that are only 3 question, of which all are very obscure to the reading. Grading on homework always low.

The class went pretty smooth and you could get away without reading the text if you payed attention in class and made sure you understood the material. Overall good teacher. He makes you work a bit, but only assigns 5 or so homework assignments and 2 tests. A couple of quizzes here and there. He is a sweet guy to talk to and is very helpful overall.

He's a great guy and really knows his stuff. The work load is manageable and it's not 100% necessary to do the readings if you make an effort in class. He's extremely nice and helpful if you ever have questions. Overall a pretty good intro to phil course. Would be a great teacher to take a heigher level phil class from too.

Hands down the worst professor I have had, EVER. As people have commented before, he is a terrible, terrible teacher. He doesn't know what the hell he is talking about and he grades so arbitrarily. Definitely a nice guy but should NOT be teaching philosophy. Do not take his class.

Moyer is hard, but if you do the reading and attend his lectures you'll do okay. Lazy people don't like him. If that is you and your looking for an easy grade, stay away. If you are ready to learn philosophy, he'll teach it to you.
