it is basically all up to you. grade is based on engagement points (8-10 weekly assignments), online quizzes on book chapters, and a final research paper. he is a very cool and caring prof but classes don't really follow a logical order and have little to do with the things you get graded on

Class is fun and interesting, but has a lot of busy work to do for HW. Rom is a really nice guy who will meet with you and is very dedicated to teaching. He can get side-tracked at times in lectures but it is still a good experience. Talk to your TA about the research project and you'll do fin.

A great guy, but his class structure was messy and could have used a lot more thought. You have to post blog entries 8 times a week, and the lectures had nothing to do with the actual course reading. Would NOT recommend.

Not the most exciting class, but you learn a lot and if you just do the activities you will get a solid grade.

Don't do it to yourself. I'm a gov major and this class wasn't worth the work. The engagement activities (8 per week) and peer reviews system didn't help me learn anything and was just busywork -- and that was when Canvas worked. Professor Rom seems like a really nice guy, but the course was a huge time suck and not worth the stress.

I took this class because all of the reviews made it seem easy. It was not. The issue was the amount of work per week is absolutely ridiculous. There are 10 pointless engagement activities, multiple 40 page readings, and impossible quizzes each week. Additionally, there is a 16 page research paper. There is just too much work for an intro class

Can't says bad things about Rom because he's so charismatic and lovely (weekly coffee with students!) You will learn a ton from this class, but it's heavy duty. Weekly quizzes, reflections, mini essays. Massive Research Project (ngl I hate this). Super worth it if you're serious about politics, but his lectures are boring & unfocused. So kind tho:(

I really like Professor Rom as a person, and I thought a lot of the course content was interesting. Also, I would say I learned a lot. In USPS, however, he used a system of "engagement activities," in which 40% of your grade in the course comes from the amount of optional activities that you complete. This results in an enormous workload.

Amazing class! Take as a freshman, it's an easy B+ or higher. Inspiring teacher who cares about reaching his students, and does so through NOT giving exams because "y'all would forget the content the second you left the exam room". Had Martin O'Malley come and speak to us as well as an editor at the Huffington Post (CNN? It was one or the other)

Pretty good professor. Reading were kind of long, and had to be done for the weekly online quizzes. However, it was great not having a midterm or final. The final is a long project- website, video, or paper. Not a terrible workload, but you have to keep up. Sunday nights will be busy.

Professor Rom runs a 100+ student lecture like nothing I've ever seen. Small group discussions, calling on students with a random number generator, and i-clicker polling on political hot topics, it's not your ordinary lecture. I like that it is engaging, but I think a little more lecturing should be incorporated. Great, fun class overall!

Professor Rom is extremely kind and outgoing to his students. He invites a group to have coffee with him every week, and emcourages participation even in such a large lecture class. He keeps class interesting with current events and was able to bring in amazing guest speakers. Really cares about his students!

Prof Rom is the best professor I've had at Georgetown. My class was a huge lecture (about 135 students), but he really made an effort to get to know everyone (he even took us out to coffee!). There is a lot of reading, but most of the grade is from online quizzes and they're super easy - you can even use the book. 10/10 would recommend!!!

Great lecturer, gives reading quizzes on blackboard, but they are very straightforward. There were a lot of components that went into the grade, so nothing screwed you over too badly. Overall, a very good professor.

Rom is a genuinely good guy and makes an effort to get to know all of his students. Class is more of a discussion, which kind of limits learning. Assignments are pretty straightforward and if you do them, you will do well. Only hard part is a research project, which still isnt too bad.

I took Professor Rom's USPS class. Rom's class was not a traditional lecture hall: there are a bunch of engagement points you have to accumulate by attending class and political events, some online quizzes (open note, but tough), and a big research project (don't procrastinate it). Overall, not particularly difficult class, just a little boring.

Professor Rom is fantastic. I took his "Numbers, Pictures, & Politics" seminar, which was interesting, collaborative, and really not too much work. We tackled a lot of very technical work in a way that was hands on and stress free. Rom is super down to earth, frequently brings food to class, and is great in office hours. Highly recommend!
