Professor Silk is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He's a terrible lecturer, has a poor teaching-style, and is not friendly in any sense of the word. The only thing he's skilled at is putting you to sleep. I do not recommend taking a class with him.

In Religion + the Media, Silk is strong. Follow along, do the reading, and make your blog posts interesting with a good hook and relevant material--always tie back to the topic. When he teaches Guided Studies, he's a mess. Take religion courses, not history courses with him.

I took Religion and the Media with him and really learned a lot. You should have an interest in the topic other wise you'll find his lectures boring. He has an amazing knowledge in the field and likes to make extensive use of the Internet while class. I can recommend it.

Silk is simply a very bad teacher. He's a bright enough guy but has no ability to carry on a coherent lecture, and lectures are the entire course. Looking around at classmates when he said something especially off-topic is very entertaining however.

Ineffective at explaining & very boring lectures. He actually said in the last class that in the 8 years he's been teaching the course, he never knew what he was supposed to be teaching! That should tell you something about the quality of the course!

discussions with him are kind of like pulling teeth. he's not actually trained in any way to be a prof, he's the head of the religion and society center or something... and it shows. he's probably an interesting person, just not in class.

not the greatest professor, let's be honest, he gave up medeival history immediately after getting the PhD, but he is awesome at religion in public life. he is the absoute man. religion majors would do well to know him. I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE HIM!!!!!!!!!
