He truly cares about his students. If you go to his office hours and put in the work, you will get where you need to be. The lab is tough, but he makes it as fun as possible. He is always there to help or talk when needed and that truly makes all the difference. I never once dreaded going to his class and I cant say that for anyone else.

Great professor for cell biology. I took over the summer, he was very slow paced in his lecture to make sure students understood what was happening. Started the class with inspiration quotes and thought provoking comments. Always available to meet and genuinely cares about his students which is hard to find at universities.

Dr. Venable is the better of the two cell teachers offered at App. Although his test is hard he really is caring. Go to his office hours and ask questions he wants to get to know his students. One of the teachers I will continue to still go see even though I am no longer taking a class of his.

Probably the worst teacher I've ever had at App. His lectures are all over the place and he constantly goes off on long pointless tangents. His tests are worded terribly and designed to trick you. His lectures and grading also seem careless. Once, about 8 people told him he graded their test wrong and he put incorrect information on the test. AVOID

He's a great professor. The tests were difficult to understand what was it asking for but it is possible to do well on them. DO NOT SKIP THIS CLASS. Like ever. I used the book a lot to go along with powerpoints to help clarify concepts. It's a difficult class but he's very friendly and willing to help you if you need it.

As a person, he's very nice. He makes an effort to get to know his students, which us admirable. But, his powerpoints are all over the place and are rarely well put together, with pretty bad use of punctuation and frequent misspellings. His exams are very complicated and use tricky language, which sucks, because those make a majority of the grade.

Grade is mostly tests. I found them average difficulty - he likes very specific questions, but he grades charitably. Extremely friendly, almost to the point of being cheesy. Spends a chunk of each lecture discussing some "inspiring" idea, which I thought to be a waste of valuable time but I guess some people like. Overall, I would recommend him.

Personally, I didn't like Venable at all. He definitely makes an effort to get to know his students which is good but his test questions are sometimes a little unclear & tricky. This part is a little rough because pretty much all your grades come from the tests. Overall, this class isn't that hard, but try to take Seals.

Just 4 exams and a paper. I've taken Mark before and didn't really like him, but the smaller class size helps. Very passionate, very intelligent. Tries his best to get to know his students and really genuinely wants to keep up with them. Maybe not the greatest professor in the Bio department, but certainly one of the most passionate.

With my class, he made us all write case studies on cardiovascular disease through out the semester. Hes trying it out, idk if he will continue it. The online quizzes are stressful, 5 Q's in 5 mins! But not hard. The tests are though, SO STUDY OKAY?! And idk why everyone is complaining, biology is hard people. Especially cell bio, so BE PREPARED.

His cell bio class is very hard, especially for a 2000 level course. He is really passionate about the subject matter, but his powerpoints are really crowded and somewhat random. Tests are very difficult. It was a huge struggle just to pull out a B from the class.

I had him for Cell Bio and Bio of Aging and he is a passionate professor but the lectures are all over the place. Tests mainly on powerpoints so it is good to memorize the powerpoints but does not teach on learning the concepts. Overall, if you are prepared to memorize 30+ slides per powerpoint, 4 powerpoints per test, then take his class.

His cell bio class is difficult, not so much because of the subject material but because his tests are somewhat random. He's a nice guy and I liked him as a teacher and learned a lot, but never felt comfortable with his tests no matter how much I studied. Very difficult to make an A in for a 2000 level class.

He is a very intelligent and inspiring professor. His tests are difficult but I never made below a 70 but also studied a fair amount. He was the most influential teacher I have ever had and thank him for that. Take this class...It just may change your life

I am not a natural sciences major, but had to take this class to graduate. He made it easier to understand for non-sci majors, but at the same time the powerpoints could be super unclear. He's a good teacher though...you can tell he's passionate about what he does.

Cell Biology is a really good introduction to fundamental bio when Venable teaches it. He knows a lot about the subject matter, particularly that with medical applications. He ties in a lot of current research which is exciting, but also tries to inspire you with quotes...not so exciting. Very nice and funny speaker.

Dr. Venable is such an awesome professor. I would totally take his class again, even though cell biology isn't the easiest subject to study. His tests are hard, but if you listen to his lecture and take good notes it's easy to pull a good grade. He is very helpful, extremely funny, and he makes leaning cell biology interesting.
