The class discussions were not always the most interesting, but he understands this and does his best to make the information as accessible as possible to everyone. You will not do well if you do not regularly attend lectures and read the assigned readings. This class was cross-listed as a religion course, but focuses mostly on the religion aspect.

If you dont agree with how he views things, you probably won't do too well. You never know what grade you get on the weekly journals until you get them all back at the end of the semester, and even then it just says "very good" or something like that. Directions are not very clear at times, and overall it's a boring class. Don't bother if you slack

I had Mark for Great Books. He's a very sweet man, and a Jewish rabbi, so his perspective on religion and the Bible is fascinating. Lectures are interesting, participation and attendance matter. Tests are tricky, as he was not always clear about what to study. There are a few papers, with fairly clear requirements, nothing overwhelming.

This class was on Judaism. As a Rabbi himself, he obviously knows a lot. There is reading homework along side a journal every night, so if you take him, be prepared for that. Pay attention though, because he is a great teacher and extremely insightful. I'd take a thousand of his classes if given the opportunity.

Dr. Verman was awesome! He was really easy as long as you did the reading, listened in class, and participated. Tests were memorization, which was super easy for me. I learned a lot about Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim religions through him. Highly recommended!!

Dr. Verman is seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. He is EXTREMELY easy but that doesn't mean you don't have to work hard. You will learn so much and have a lot of reading and writing to do. Test are basically memorization and you can easily get an 100 or better. I learned so much about Religion and he is just an amazing person!

As a nonreligious person in a class full of super Christians, it was refreshing to hear Dr. Verman's Jewish perspective on the Bible. There is a TON of writing, in the form of two papers and a journal response for EVERY class. But the topic was interesting so I enjoyed the class overall.

Dr. Verman is very intelligent and really knows his material. He has homework for every class, but it really isn't difficult. He comes off a bit dry, but pay attention because his insight is amazing!

His class consists of about 75% of workload. Biased based on faith. Gives too much work to begin with, and then increases as the class goes on. Believes his class is the most important anyone will have. Assigns "Extra-curricular" activities that are mandatory to make up for the times he was on a holiday. Does not hand back papers. Do not recommend.

He's a good professor. The class was really easy, but it contained a lot of busiwork in the form of writing assignments. He tries to keep lectures interesting. Nothing much to complain about with him.

He's a great professor and knows what he's doing, but if you are not genuinely interested in the bible or in biblical history, you might be bored. The only complaint that I have about his classes is that he makes you split up in groups a lot-- which gets annoying sometimes. But overall, you will learn a lot from him and he is a good man.

Took him for Holocaust and Film and Women in the Old Testament. I absolutely adore this prof; while he may ask you to do a fair bit of writing, he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable (he took the rabbi test for fun!) and loves to talk with students. Lotta respect for him.

Most of it has been said - but for my overall perspective, as a Christian: 1) He IS a Jewish rabbi, so there will naturally be some bias - mostly covering the Old Testament, 2) doesn't really like Christianity, 3) Be prepared to be called upon in class, 4) Don't be easily offended, it is not intentional,5) He grades fairly.

He is an interesting professor, but he is biased with his religion. If you are Christian, I would not take the class because you could easily be offended. He assigns way too much work and calls it "busy work." If you do not see things the way he does, then you will not get good grades.

Excellent course On Book of Genesis, well taught. Uses Alter's translation of Genesis and Dalley's "Myths from Mesopotamia" (Available from library). Requires submission of a daily journal (minimum 6 sentences) on the days reading and two seven page papers. Uses a mixture of lecture and class discussion. You can expect to be called on in class.

I really enjoyed his class. The only really hard part is the Biblical Analysis we had to do, but he was very helpful with that.
