Can't recommend Alcorn highly enough. He has high standards, but only because he's a brilliant guy. He's super-wiling to meet with students and provide feedback - definitely hit him up for help before papers/exams. Do your reading, come to class, and speak up every now and then and he'll like you.

There are a few papers and a lot of reading but he is extremely knowledgeable on the topics. The class is discussion based so it's interesting if you pay attention and stay engaged. I developed a great relationship with him over the course.

Marhsall Alcorn is hands down the most amazing professor I've ever had. He is ridiculously understanding and simultaneously extremely inspirational and intelligent. I have taken two classes with him and thoroughly enjoyed both. If you bother to do the reading and participate, you will get so much out of it.

Comment:
Alcorn is helpful and flexible as a professor. He cares about his students. The theories can seem daunting but he is good at breaking down material and grades papers moderately. Talk to him about your papers before you write them as he is very responsive and gives many suggestions for topics, examples, routes to take, etc.

HAHA still a space cadet! Great discussions, WILDLY interesting personal experiences. Somewhat dry and incomprehensible subject matter made palatable, possibly even interesting. Papers and tests require your attention, but are not impossible. Makes even the most ridiculous student comments seem insightful- try it!

Complete space cadet. I sometimes worry about him (he has admitted to never having brushed his hair) but he is really nice. very respectful of student input (even when its completely unwarranted) and its almost impossible not to like him. Lectures lack structure though so if you are looking to learn something, take another professor.

allowed me to see how relevant literature is to other fields like politics, philosophy, anthro, society... the professor was very laid back: you can miss a couple classes and turn in one paper late. brings experience and knowledge in explaining and applying dense material, encourages group discussion and is genuinely interested in student opinions

Great! The discussions in class are interesting. People like the class. Papers are open-ended, and he explains how he wants them structured through peer review. Very laid back, you can miss a couple classes but going is worth it. He has a lot to say and respects his students. Take it! (Pretty easy too: only 4 papers for the whole semester).

Class was a requirement, but a total snoozefest. also criminally horrible reading list. i've asked around, but this class is the lesser of a few evils. prof. is understanding and flexible.
