Comment:

Martha is an absolute unit. She's sweet and caring and very interested in seeing her students succeed. I did minimal work in this class and got an A or B. The lectures can be very sleep-inducing because she has a very calming and slow lecture style so make sure you bring icy cold water to stay awake. Come with an open mind.

Comment:

Professor Smith was definitely an influential teacher for me. She really cared if students were grasping the information. She also cared about students outside of class, and was always available for conversation. The textbooks were poetry and were often used, and available online. She is available through email, but may not respond immediately.

The class was co-taught with Jason Rudy. Both were very passionate about poetry. It got pretty boring at times, but if you slightly keep up with readings and can write semi-decent papers, failing is impossible and you'll probably get an A.

Prof smith is great. I hated even the idea of women's lit but she makes lecture interesting. very biased lectures, but NOT in grading. people who say she's looking for specific answers are straight up wrong. A LOT of reading but you don't have to do it all. One of the few profs that really really wants her students to succeed.

The class was not that bad but the professor did not understand that presenting lecture slides that had paragraph after paragraph of writing is not helpful. There were also in class quizzes that were listed no where on the syllabus and ended up being 15% of the grade.

Good lecturer, but doesn't seem to realize that hers isn't the only class you're probably taking. Assigns an insane amount of reading for one class. Required paper topics are abstract and she obviously has a specific "answer" that she's looking for-if you miss it your grade suffers. Not too bad, but be prepared to WORK and use your TA.

It seems like only one (possibly 2) are getting over B+. All my friends "failed" or got a D. When you take her class, the very first mail you will get from her is that she won't answer to her students with e-mail, nor she will help her student since she has approx 180 students in her class

Unless you absolutely LOVE women's literature with all your heart, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Required more work than all my other classes combined. Read atleast 6 novels along with 2 text books and lots of online reading. Grade; Paper1:20%, Paper2:30%,POPquizzes:20%, Final:30%. The paper TOPICS were an incomprehensible and a page long. UGH

Um pretty much the worst class ever.This is supposed to be an introduction class and it required more work than my other four classes combined. After a whole semester, I really hadn't learned anything about women's literature.The assigned novels are great but you have to read 200-600 page books in a week. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.

Professor Smith's lectures are often very entertaining, but the required work for the class is IMPOSSIBLE. The amount of reading alone is rediculous and you'll never use most of the readings. Oh, and there's pop quizzes, too... Grade is based on quizzes, two essays, and the final.

As a straight male, it was horrible. Allowed female students to stroll in at any time, but if a male was late he was called out in front of everyone. I didnt agree with Thelma and Louise being lesbians, and she blasted my paper, as if to say they were clearly lesbians... what a joke, I got a D in that class and have never recieved lower than a B+

Who the heck are these people? Yes, she was hard but hers was one of the best classes I ever took and I'm a straight boy. I LOVED Professor Smith. So there.
