Comment:

She is a very tough teacher, but she knows her stuff and is very passionate about what she teaches. She challenges you to be a better writer. I highly recommend this class, especially if you have plans on working in the writing / English field. You may feel overwhelmed, but you learn so much as long as you are willing to grow.

I did benefit from this class because of all of the things I didn't like about it. That being said, it was a challenge. I was not quite ready for Professor Collar and the rigor of her classes. I would like to take a class with her in my later two years to see if I need more time to adjust to college.

Mary Collar is by far the toughest grader and expects the best from her students. It doesn't matter if you were amazing at writing in high school, Mary will crush you. If you want to be an English major, take one of Mary's classes to see if you're really in the right field. If you're not, avoid her classes like the plague.

I really like Mary Collar very much and she is very passionate about english and i find that inspirational; although the class is hard and involves a lot of higher thinking. She really expects you to understand what she is saying when at times it can be slightly covert.

Comment:

Went to law school after Albion and was a Gerstacker student while there. Critical thinking skills and growth from Professor Collar's classes outweigh all others prior and since. Quite simply, the best professor I have ever had. She won't be around forever, so take as many of her classes as possible.

Like many people have stated she is a TON OF WORK. This is not a skate by or stick to the background class. She is a very tough and no BS grader. I am sure that I will improve through this class but every other day I ask myself if it is worth the stress. I would say avoid at all cost, unless you love the material.

I can understand why some dislike her; she pushes you in ways you never imagined. It has been nearly 15 years since I graduated from Albion, and she is still one of the most influential profs I ever had there. I learned more from her than any other classes, and wish I could retake them now that I'm a little older and understand more.

probably the hardest teacher i have ever had. I was more of a scientific writer then the way she wanted. her quizzes are tough but doable if you do the reading. she is harsh on grading, but if you put the work in you will do fine. she is somewhat egotistical, but shes pretty down to earth. i improved so much in my writing though. shes very good!

Mary Collar is extremely hard, but manageable. Make sure you do the reading and try your best on the papers. She will give you the grade you earn. If you need help, ask her. She is tough but you will definitely learn and benefit from her class. Just do your best and don't expect a 4.0, because it's unlikely.
