Comment:
She taught African-American literature. Not qualified to discuss the black experience and rambled all class. Would freely repeat the N word from the literature without any sort of warning or acknowledgement that as a white woman she should not be able to say a racial slur at all. Class was uncomfortable for many students of color.

Second class that I've taken with Mary, and loved it just as much as the first. She is a great prof, and clearly cares about what she teaches. She's endearingly goofy, highly knowledgeable about the material, and really enjoys class discussion & participation. Straight forward grading expectations and a very lovely prof. Would take her class again!

Comment:
Mary Esteve should not be teaching. She does not care for students' interest in the class and chooses topics only she wants to read about. The whole course is based upon her own research interest, and texts are often too advanced for our understanding. There were moments when she was rude to students and made us feel uncomfortable. Do not take her.

Comment:
Mary's seminar was disorganised, dull, and overly complex. It had nothing to do with English literature, but was organized only around the interests of Prof. Esteve. She took no time to describe terms and philosophical theories as she spoke, left little space for students to jump in, and often kept us 45 minutes over the allocated class time. Rude

Mary is absolutely wonderful ;clearly cares a lot about the material, and responds very well if you show that you have engaged with the works. Her enthusiasm for the class was refreshing to see in a professor. The exams and essays are not tricky; just show that you've listened in class and that you have thought about the texts beyond the lecture.

Mary is one of the best teachers I have had at Concordia, I've taken her twice. She gets really excited when students do well on assignments, and grades fairly. The textbooks you use WILL be used, and she's fine if you get other editions. Her material is interesting, and she's great. I feel like I have learned so much with her both times.

She was really nice and she grades our exams and papers REALLY FAST. I would take her again just for that. But she assigns boring books and her class is boring.

Comment:
Professor Esteve is very approachable and very charming. She sticks to the course subject throughout the entire class, however her lectures become long and boring. She's a very fair grader - you get what you deserve. She expects the readings to be done (understandably) and gets anxious when someone leaves the class early. I would take again.

Comment:
I get the feeling that Prof. Esteve would be best suited for teaching grad school at a better school instead of undergrad at Concordia. I understand the complaints I read on this page, but also the reality is she is incredibly bright and insightful - as well as a great person. She's just not best suited for the mediocrity of Concordia students.

She's brilliant, but you have to work for it. Knows the subject inside and out. Sure she can be bit illusive and run on about things, but it's interesting to see where she goes. Word hard and be attentive.

This teacher needs to retire. She's anal, uses out of this world vocabulary to express simple ideas that would be more thought provoking if she'd stick to the vernacular. Students always look bored out of their wits, &no one ever speaks up. She speaks AT you with no interest in engaging you, just wants to show off her fancy words. HORRIBLE PROF.

Mary is the kind of teacher where it was tough having her, but after having her, I appreciated what I'd learned from her class. A lot of what she said flew over my head in lecture. However, when I spoke to her personally on the phone about a paper, she was very personable and helpful. She is such a nice lady, just hard to grasp her lectures at times

I've been in four of Mary's classes and she is one of my favorite English profs at Concordia. Yes, she is a bit scattered in lectures, yes she can be verbose, but she is also challenging, engaging, funny and quirky. You have to be prepared to work hard in her classes and to take intellectual risks. She will listen to what you have to say.

She is a good prof. She does tend to go on about unrelated stuff and our reading focused a lot on economics, but overall if you know when to tune out, she's a good lecturer. Also, she's a fair marker.

Awful. I am a vigilant student and while the marks I received for this course were good, I would not recommend ANYONE to take this teacher. She is inconsistent and gets lost on tangents. Good luck getting your papers/tests back in time to write the next one. She made me dread American literature, and I love the subject.

Meaningless, Pointless and Scattered...describes perfectly 394. if you need help outside of class be prepared not to get any. I've never seen so many people drop out of class like hers. she's all over the place, and never gets her point across and rambles too much towards the end of class.

This class was great, perfect for anyone interested in an intro to critical theory. my head wasn't all there that semster so i didn't do to well, but i wish i could retake it now just to be involved in discussions. she's a sympathetic professor, enthusiastic and scattered. great!

she was all right during classes, but if you need help or advice outside of classes, beware. she single-handedly kept me from graduating because she wouldn't email me an assignment she'd given out, and then chose to mark me down because i did it "wrong".

Prof. Esteve is extremely intelligent, and I often joked that we needed a thesaurus to fully understand the lectures! Approachable, good sense of humor and takes no bull. Sympathetic too. However, the one downside: lectures difficult to follow; often wavered from one topic to another quickly. Overall, I learned alot!
