In all honesty. She is the worst professor I have ever had. She is completely biased, and she does not encourage free thinking at all, especially when it comes to Catholicism. She is too set in stone, and if you do not think like her, she will discourage you in your thinking. I highly recommend taking a different professor. JUST STAY AWAY FROM HER!

If you have Birge on your course schedule, change it now. There are so many other great theology professors at the Mount who you can take and have a relatively easy time passing or getting an A in the class. On the other hand, Sr./Dr. Birge is an extremely hard grader who gives out mountains of busy work along with long essays and crazy tests.

She never said anything that was "wacky"... I think that she says things that were made to incite conversation or debate, not to be taken as canon. Never failed to convey Catholic understandings, (but respected other interpretations as well). A lot of the biblical interpretations have to do with literary triangle: audience, authors, and message.

She was 1. knowledgeable and passionate about biblical history, 2. nothing she said was heretical (and I studied Catholic Catechism sooo... also never required me to call God a "heshe") 3. tough grader but provided everything you need to succeed (ie study guides) 4. Honestly the worst teacher I have ever had, in ALL divisions of education. I know many English teachers are somewhat biased, but Sr. Mary Kate does not appreciate any creative or individual input. So agree with her messed up views, and you will be fine. On the flip side, there were no exams and little homework.

I know there are a lot of people who hated her class, but I honestly liked it. I had no interest in learning Theology and hated the idea of having to take any Theo classes in college. I took her Foundations of Theo class and thought it was very easy to understand, and made me appreciate the subject. Liked it enough to take another of her classes.

She is a talented and memorable teacher. She taught me Latin in High School, and to this day I still value what I learned from her. She is warm, caring person, and an excellent teacher. I credit her in part with my 99th%ile verbal score on the GRE.

The lessons are not taught clearly at all, her views are not Catholic most of the time, and she grades down if your views are not EXACTLY the same as hers.
