Prof Lyons is extremely intelligent and knows what she is talking about, but she is hard to follow at times. Great class to take if you want to become a better writer, but difficult grader. Office hours are a must if you want a good grade - she might keep you there for over an hour though. If you just want the A, pick a different class.

Professor Lyons is very intelligent. Her classes are very random and usually on current events/videos/examples of writing. There's only four papers plus the final. Edits your paper well but then the next time she reads it, will suggest something you originally did. Easy grader but she will pick apart your work. Confusing but she is best one on one.

Comment:

Mary Lyons is one of the best and worst professors at Bryant University. She says she doesn't grade writing style, but she does. She also gives everyone B's the first paper and then A's on the last to make herself look good. Spends time telling stories. Utilize office hours, it's a must for her. A little odd, sometimes makes you mad, but easyish.

Seems nice at first but if you dont go to office hours shes pretty nasty. Doesnt seem to realize that students have other classes besides hers. Lectures are boring and unrelated. Loves to hear herself talk. Just do yourself a favor and dont take her. Youll regret it big time.

a wonderful lady but her class is a complete waste of time. 5 essays in the semester. she lectures in class about nothing pertaining to the course. she likes to read her own writing. office hours dont help. good luck

Mary Lyons is an excellent writer but has no business being a professor. She spends most of class rambling, feedback is contradictory, you may lose points for following it. All essay s are pushed back to the last minute and grades aren't posted until weeks after semester ends. Doesn't use BB, you couldn't pay me to take this course again with her.

She is very knowledgable, but she's older than you'd imagine for a media class. She gets off track a lot. I feel I don't learn anything walking out of the class because I already know how social media works, and she's slightly behind on something that's so recent. We don't do any writing. I wish it was more focused on concepts, techniques, styles.

She has good intentions, but horrendous delivery. She encourages class discussions but only allows students to talk about what she wants to talk about. The class itself was super boring and her lectures were dull and pointless. I would never take a class with her again.

Most boring class I have taken. Talks for most of class about irrelevant things. Helps you edit essay but stills grades it extremely hard. Doesn't really make it clear what she's looking for. Do not take.

She is nice and wants you to be engaged ein the class. Her intentions don't necessarily translate to her teaching. We spent most of the class time watching past projects and looking at examples from the news. While I'm not opposed to real life examples, balance is essential. She didn't spend enough time on the "big picture".

Worst professor ever. Gives you a syllabus and then doesn't follow it. She states that guidelines are one thing and then goes back on it half way through the class. Doesn't give strict deadlines. She is boring, rude, and abrasive. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IT IS NOT WORTH IT!

Hands down worst professor here. Comes off very sweet but literally does nothing the entire semester and then piles it all on at the end. Nobody learned a thing & she's a very tough grader despite never teaching the subject. I got a B & she didnt grade 3 of my assignments b/c she said I didnt hand them in. After getting an A, I can say that it was one of the worst classes I have ever sat through. She has a very specific writing style and penalizes anyone who deviates from that absurd style. My writing may have even gotten worse through this course. But if you want an easy A keep the essays simple and act like you care about the bull she says.

It's clear the people complaining about her "rambling" & hard grading aren't really listening to the insightful things she says & are looking for an easyA. She is a wonderful person & great teacher if you listen & give the respect she deserves. Genuinely cares about her students & teaching. I have taken 3 classes with her & have learned so much!!

She talks way too much and gets off topic. The only time you can learn something is if you go after class to talk to her. She NEVER finishes on time- always 5-10 mins later. We get NOTHING done during class and there is a lot of confusion and lack of clarification. No homework, no quizzes, just papers.

She is boring, rambles on about nothing, keeps you after class at least 5 minutes late EVERY TIME, never uses the textbook, and tells you how to fix articles but continues to give bad grades. On the plus side, she never pays attention to due dates and gives extra credit. For COM majors, dont waste your time in this class. NOT WORTH IT. TOO BORING.
