ancient teaching methods : so weird that we go to university to learn how to be a teacher and they hire teachers that are lecturer and not teachers: long lectures, unclear evaluation criterias, no evaluation grid, etc. She uses a 1989 projector. she does not have compassion either, don't expect her to explain the reason behind your grades.

Very knowledgeable, old style. She gives no gifts however, she provides outstanding feedbacks. If you understand what she really wants you will improve a lot and perform very well. Understand your mistakes even if you get low grades in the class assignments. She is very fair. I am glad I choosed the right teacher. Great teaching quality.

Just show up and listen. you don't need to take notes at all unless English is your second language. She actually has some pretty darn good knowledge and is a sweet old lady. Lots of group writing. The group writing is pretty easy and are almost identical to the questions on the final. Finished the final in under 2 hours. Easy class.

For small thing, the professor can file a case (academic code of conduct) on you. If you don't want this in your career then don't take any course with her. Very tough professor. The human without the soul.

If you have disabilities that cause you to miss class, this is quite possibly the most unaccommodating professor at Concordia The course pack is an unholy mess There are no formal instructions for the report She refuses to have you write an in-class assignment at home even if it's only for practice And I could go on, but character limit...

Took it summer 2016. Lots of public speaking, writing, reading. Basically an English class. The report was a pain to write and there is a solo presentation.

Very frustrating prof to have. Class is easy, but her grading criteria, what she wants & her textbook are all over the place. Her lectures are boring, but to the point, she goes over the material. She's an okay choice for 282, but avoid her if possible. Lots of group work involved. Managed an A, but only 1 person got an A+ (out of 170 people).

Mary Silas appears knowledgeable and covers a lot of materials from memos to letters. The course-pack wasn't very well organized, examples were all over the place. For in-class assignments she doesn't give clear feedback on how to improve your writing. Assignments are done in groups, your grade is affected by the writing skills of your teammates

Mary Silas is neither a bad teacher nor a great one. Half the class marks can be obtained just by showing up and doing a little bit of the work. She won't give you 100% unless you do every little things the exact same way she wants you to. Lectures early in the morning are long/boring. It's mandatory so take it in the Summer (short 6 weeks).

She's a really tough grader and makes it difficult to understand what specifically she expects from you (her course pack doesn't always correspond with her verbal instructions). A positive aspect is that most work is done in class. I also find her a bit old fashioned in her teaching as well. AWFUL feedback. Quick grader.

well.... ENCS 282 should be an easy course but not with this professor, attendance is mandatory in both lectures and tutorials not to mention that she cares about stupid little details. So overall if you can take this class with another do it, if not well you have to be very careful, attend all of her classes and do all of her in class assignments.

This teacher is ancient. She uses the oldest methods to teach. Remember that old projector from elementary school, well yea get ready for it. She does not give clear guidelines, and her corrections make no sense and are barely legible. She circles random words and does not explain why. I honestly think she pulls the grades out of nowhere. AVOID
