Personally, I think he's a good professor. If you're interested in the class it will definitely help your grade. Reading's are important for the essays but you don't need to read throughout. Just pay attention in class. He knows his stuff and is a really nice guy.

A very skilled professor. He has great content knowledge. Cares very much for students as individuals and really wants his students to learn. He is very supportive. One conversation with him during office hours will dispel any of the negative criticisms here.

I took Pacific history, at first I thought this was going to be a good class but I was wrong. I did get a good grade in the class but he sn't very nice. He encourages class participation and says that there are no wrong answers, but basically laughs in your face if you give an answer he thinks is dumb.

Histories of the Pacific... DO NOT TAKE THAT CLASS- it is a GPA destroyer. Readings necessary for the 3 lengthy essays, no other grades. Hypocritical, rude, demeaning, and disorganized (jumped from one thing to another without cnnxtions). He tries to be cool and funny, but he's actually rude and pretty much DISGRACE to Rutgers History faculty.

Professor Matsuda is a tough grader, don't get me wrong. But you can get a good grade even if you end up with a C on an assignment. Histories of the Pacific is obscure but do at least some of the readings, or turn them into a searchable pdf file and use them in your midterm essays and you are good to go. He didnt give As, just fyi

The professor is nice enough as a person. Would NEVER take one of his classes again. He assumes you know all the basics and when you don't he insults your entire culture/generation. Did not learn a single thing in this class. The readings are interesting though. Take time to write! If your paper is on the same level as the majority of the class =

the most boring class. prof. thinks he's a comedian but is just annoying. instead of lecturing about the material clearly, he makes constant side comments that have nothing to do with anything. 3 exams which are papers that you are expected to write as if you were an english major. enjoy.

took his history of the pacific class and really regret it. there are 3 papers [2 midterm papers and 1 final 9 page "project"]. 1/4 of the class had to rewrite the 2nd midterm paper because he didn't think they "deserved credit." class time is spent looking at random pictures on power point. not worth it, if you're not a history major.

Prof. Matsuda is one of the best in the history department. He's creative and unconventional in his teaching and generous with his time. He is a rigorous grader but he actually gives you in-depth feedback on your work. My writing definitely improved under his guidance. Bring an open mind and he'll change the way you think and write about history.

Matsuda is interesting - in a good way. i had him my first semester and even though it took a bit to get used to his teaching style, I enjoyed the class. Papers are a little vague in the beginning but ask him and he'll clarify it for you. Overall, a good class - got a 'b' in it and he wrote a recommendation for me. Very intelligent and chill.

Matsuda is great. Sure he is a little spacey but his knowledge and perspective on the pacific made for a great class. This class is a conceptual look at history, which is what a history class should be. Take the class if you want to understand history, not just memorize it.

Partly because of Professor Matsuda's teaching I went on to attend seminars & courses on Japan, eventually did a college honors. His lectures were witty & cultured. He helped introduce me to the exquisite land of Japan.

I love these pointless and touchy "he's such a nice guy" reviews. It's true that he's nice and funny, but he flat out sucks at teaching. Bottom line. He expects you to write these great creative papers. He makes it more of a research/creative writing class, than a history class. Take him if you like funny profs and dont care about your GPA.

I've never taken a history course taught in such a unique way. The history isn't refined of all its goriness, then injected with patriotism and fed to you. This a great class for those of you who want to analyze history, not just memorize dates. In fact, the absence of date-repetition sometimes causes me to get lost in time.

i actually liked prof. matsuda. he wants you to take the class seriously, but he's so happy-go-lucky that people just don't care to analyze the what the class is all about. history is not just about the past; it's about its relationship to the present. if you don't get what this means, then you may as well become O'Neill's TA.

guy is ridiculous, mummbles about unrelated boring slides and films. Does not really teach u the history instead he makes u try to create the history out of his lectures. outragous grading. but hes pretty helpful when u go see him. copy n paste half the final project and got a C for the class

I'm a senior and this is by far the worst class I've ever taken. It's unbearably boring, and he is an extremely difficult grader. After getting A's habitually in 300 and 400 level classes, I got a B in this class, which is a 200 level. Don't take it unless you really love the subject, and even then, that's pushing it.
