I took this course hoping it would be an "easy arts elective" (I'm in engineering) but it actually requires a bit of effort. Evenden is an amazing lecturer and very passionate about the subject, so be sure to take good notes of what he says in class! Readings are mandatory and interesting, and your TA controls your grade.

He's very knowledgeable and passionate about the course but your TAs determine most of your grade (discussion participation, midterm, term paper..) This course really felt like a history one and its important to take notes with the powerpoints he posts. Readings are mandatory for both exams. Class avg was 67.

More of a history class than geography. Very clear during lectures but they can be boring sometimes. Lecture notes are posts online, which is nice! Who you have as your TA plays a significant role on how you do in this course and make sure to ALWAYS attend discussion! Personally didn't like the course but the prof and TAs are very knowledgeable.

Was a very interesting lecturer with incredible speaking ability. Without him, material would appear boring. Lectures were interesting - just listening would be satisfactory. Testing was fair to easy

Great prof, just dull content. but you must listen and take good notes because the lecture slides (posted online beforehand) are only dot points and do not have much detail. midterm 20% and paper 30% were ok but for the final 40%, it matters if you've done the readings or not. Participation in discussions count 10%. get your definitions clear

I hated the course from day 1. The prof is smart, know his stuff and he is passionate about the class. I just didn't like that the course was pure history other Geography and I have never been a fan of studying history.

Matthew was extremely passionate about geography and extremely knowledgeable about the material. However, the material encompassed so much (1400s-present) that it was nearly impossible to grasp what was going on as we hopped around from time period to time period. Would not recommend, hard class.

Glassman is a wonderful teacher, and his teaching style definitely suits this course. His lectures consistently contain interesting material, just enough to make you think, but not enough to overload you. His slides include what you need to know, but no more. This is preferable, because further material is always available for this course.

This class is more of Canadian history than geography. Expects a lot of reading! However, he provides lecture outlines online. In addition, his exams were fair. He doesn't care about attendance. Lectures are boring, but he is clear with topics.

Nice prof, easy to understand. It is important to note however, this isn't your typical geography course and was definitely more like a history course, the least interesting course I took in my first year. Readings were long and uninteresting. I found essay questions on the exam to be quite complicated and not straightforward.

I remember walking out of some of his lectures with the feeling that my mind had been worked over with a cat o' nine tails. One time he started a brief history with: 'I remember when...' and as he related the story I found myself double checking to see that he was not over 200 years old.

He's got to be one of the most intelligent and eloquent profs at ubc by far---i found what the course covered was really broad (understandable for a first year course) and a straight up lecture might be daunting for some people, but he is just so knowledgeable that you learn so much. TAs determine your mark. Difficult to get an A, but worth it.

lectures are extremely boring. Dont need to attend it, because it's useless. Just read the assigned article and you will do well. The discussion group was just as useless, but attendence is mandatory. One of the most boring class in my 3 years in UBC so far.

I thought this was a geography class, but it totally turned out to be a history class. So History 12 did help me in some ways. Final exam marking was really harsh. Don't take this class if you are an ESL student.
