Witty, brilliant, kind. He's very quirky and open about his life. One of the best professors I've ever had and makes me not want to graduate.

Comment:
Professor Stuart is a brilliant scholar and a wonderful teacher. He shares his knowledge clearly and concisely; he is clever and thorough, and entirely nice! His class was thought provoking and intriguing, with not too much work at all well worth it. It was a small class (10), so it was conversational and engaging. Will take again hopefully.

I'm a senior philosophy major, and I've had all the philosophy profs at Bowdoin. Prof. Stuart is in many ways the best. Different in style from the rest, but gets the best out of his class. Highly recommended for all majors, and others if you are willing to try hard. He's incredibly fair. You sometimes have to listen carefully to understand him.

Easily the hardest prof at Bowdoin, especially for an intro level class! He's much better suited to seminar-style classes. But worth taking.

He doesn't realize it, but his lectures are quite obscure sometimes. Doesn't make difficult concepts immediately clear. Very highly specialized on Locke and the like, very piercing personality. Friendly but kind of unsettling. Needs some pedagogical training!

The class description seemed interesting but the course itself was not. He refuses to accept anyone's ideas except his own and would make it clear that he disagreed with you in class. Lectures were boring even though articles could be intriguing. Grading was tough, especially if you disagree with his ideas. Not a course I'd recommend.

Comment:
Perhaps the most condescending and intellectually intimidating professor I've had at Bowdoin. Also, teaches a class of 12 like a lecture class of 50: just stands and delivers the entire class; no questions, group activities, or anything.

Both intelligent and non-patronizing, he is an expert in the fields of metaphysics and epistemology. His specialty in modern philosophy on Locke and, to some extent, Hume is mind blowing. Strongly recommend!

People get mad at him for shutting their ideas down. They should thank him because if he didn't do that they might continue believing something silly. Ethics are not subjective.

I have taken every class he teaches, the lectures are amazing!!!! As far as I am concerned if you are intelligent the classes are little to no work and you will achieve an above average grade. If you consider yourself unintelligent or not logical you may struggle, but he will improve your overall intelligence or atleast make you appear smarter

Incredibly intelligent, expects effort out of every student, crafted his ideas thoroughly and very approachable if you come in with an open mind. Thoe who are too opinionated will have a difficult time.

Piercing eyes, piercing personality. Very knowledgable/clear/thoughtful, but not really open to any ideas/interpretations outside his own. I've taken a couple of classes with him and talked to him often outside of class, and I can confidently say that if you want a good grade, just regurgitate what he says.

As a non-philosopher I struggled but he stayed and helped explain the secrets of the universe multiple times a week to help out. Ended up barely pasing but I passed and he probably would have passed me regardless as he appreciated my hard work and me his!

Woah. Hardest class I've taken at Bowdoin, AND its a 100 level. I did learn a lot, but despite studying excessively barely squeezed by with a C... tests are his way or the highway.
