Took for Pluralism req. I would look for another one if you aren't interested in Westerns and movies from 1920. Movies are so boring and long and you need to watch 3 a week. You can barely hear him talk. Even when I watched the movies for the final, the questions and quotes are impossible and he grades essays VERY hard on grammar.

ALOT of movies have to be watched, 3 a week. That doesn't seem like a lot, but sometimes the movies are boring because theyre old. If you don't watch the movies you won't know what he's talking about in class. He is very interesting if you keep up w/ movies

very well known film critic/writer so he knows what he's talking about. if you're interested in the subject, you'll learn valuable information. not a hard grader. really nice guy. i'd take him again in a second

For Movies and American Experience, he's awesome.. Explains EXACTLY what you need to know for the test. Fair grader. Helpful DURING tests. The movies are good too, but you have to watch 3 a week. But it's also a movies class, so don't take it if you're a complete turd and don't plan on watching any. No readings.

no surprises on the tests if you take good notes. EXTREMELY helpful if you see him after class or in office hours. he is very well known in the film world too and does cool outside work, just doesn't brag about it. class isn't hard if you can appreciate classic films

Doesn't tell you the ins and outs of writing a screenplay, only tells you how to format it. He makes you watch millions of scenes in class to "ahow" you how to write a screenplay. It doesn't help. He sets a high bar for your 60pg screenplay thats very hard to reach. Don't take this class or this teacher. He's horrible and a tough, tough grader.

Boring movies. Boring class (2.5 hrs of him talking AT you about the movies you just finished watching). His tests are extremely detailed, and mostly based off of what he said in class rather than what you watched. I found it hard to pay attention to him, but if you do I'm sure he gives you all the answers to the tests. He sucks.Don't take him ever

The films are not all favorites but most are essential in understanding the notables of the film industry. More time could be given to how they relate to the American Experience, but M.R. is a film buff and I learned a lot. The tests ARE picky, but there is little to read and if you watch and take notes, it's no big deal.

If only I had watched more of the movies I would have gotten an A. The midterm and finally really test the notes you take in class, so take good ones. The hard part was identifying quotes from movies. He doesn't grade the papers too hard though, I got an A- on my first one and an A on an extra credit paper (5-10 pages each)- he knows his stuff

Guys, it's a movies class. You won't do well unless you WATCH the movies. Granted, you are required to watch 3 a week, but netflix it if you can spare the 10 bucks a month. No textbooks, minor amount of reading handouts, midterm, final, and final paper. Make sure to take notes - no surprises on the tests if you take good notes.

Nothing like watching semi-shady foreign movies in the Walsh library basement! He's an okay guy, though a bit unapproachable...run your paper by him and you're fine...some of the movies are positively painful, but they're well-known and worth having exposure to. Good class, if it's something you're interested in. Listen to the lectures.

I took this class b/c I needed to fulfill the pluralism requirement. I hope you have 6 hours a week to devote to watching some of the most boring films ever. Go to lectures and watch the films, cuz you'll be sunk if you don't. See him in his office for your paper before you write it, or you'll be sorry.

BEWARE !!!!!This class is a waste of time. You have devote 6hrs a week to boring movies. Movie watching tedious and unenjoyable. The midterm is awful because he expects you to be so specific. Just memorize ALL the characters names in all 20+ movies you have to watch for the midterm... catch my drift? He is meticulous and anal about grammar on the pa

I concur. His class was movie trivia. You will learn nothing. You will waste time re-watching pretty lackluster movies you've no doubt seen before, just to try and memorize what color a secondary character was wearing. Useless. But an easy credit, if you don't mind being bored to tears.

He is an interesting professor. But I found that he was too picky when grading exams. The class itself is pretty good, but you have to watch the movies.Don't fall behind b/c it's a pain to catch up.Take really good notes b/c the exams are detailed.Absolutely perfect grammar is expected in your paper.

No matter how you put it, this man teaches gives tests on movie trivia. Nothing to do with "American Experience". Taking this class was a waste of time, and Prof. is obnoxious with a VERY inflated view of himself. Dude, you teach movie trivia. Get over it.

This is an evil man who makes a number of mistakes in class. If someone tries to corect him on his falsified film knowledge he makes up more crap. Doing an extra credit paper that is nine pages is a joy. But when it lowers your grade...?
