This is Dr Merken?s last year teaching he is an amazing individual who fought in WWII and loves teaching so much that he taught into his 90?s. Dr Merken is amazingly accomplished having dual degrees from both Harvard and Yale. He is a bit old school but it the standard that classy should be set to. He will be missed by all.

i took Dr. Merken in the spring of 2010. While he checks attendance every day, it doesn't affect your grade at all. The labs are easy, and at the end of the semester your cumulative lab grade = 1 test. 3 other tests that are open book, but you must study VERY HARD. take all the notes, you'll need them.

Mereken is about 84 years old. He is no longer an effective teacher. His class is very hard. The best way to pass is to get a tutor. Try to avoid him.

avoid!!! get a tutor; study guides r not useful; his lectures= monotone & confusing; copy down any notes he gives; 4 exams(open notes + open book) ea is worth 20%. the last 20% is ur lab grade.u can do 5 board work solutions for xtra cred; recommend buying 5 steps to a 5 (ap chem)book for 16.00 avail @ borders-breaks down difficult concepts 4 u

The man has seriously had his lessons set in stone for decades, nothing he teaches makes sense, and he often can't understand questions being asked and when he does....it doesn't help much. Tests are open book & open notebook...not like anything on the test is in those anyways. take another professor if possible. this class is a struggle.

You must take a lot of notes in Merken's class. There are board questions and if you do 5 of them you get 5 points added to your final grade. You may be confused after his lectures, so study sessions are good. Exams are open-notes and open-book, but they do take very long. Hes a great guy and should be appreciated for how long he has been teaching!

WOW, he is still teaching. I must agree with the other posters in that if you can not self teach do not take his class. His lectures have little relationship with his tests. He is very sweet and if you are a good self studier you will get an A. I took him for both 110 and 111.

Merky was so cute and old that we just loved him. However we all would have to study together because everybody would be more confused after class. I rarely went to class and still managed to pull off a B. If you don't know how to self teach, I wouldn't take this class. He is the king of packets that are a waste of paper too! But, we love the guy!

Veyr old and old fashioned. Open whatever you want to open tests (4) and then labs. Thats his class in a nut shell. If you suck at chemistry and can't teach yourse;f don;t take him. He is very cute and helpful but his help doesn't help much. Easy easy class, boring to sit through but worth the 3 credits!

He is a horrible teacher. he will pass out study guides and tyies to teach off of them but really doesnt. he doesnt teach in a way that is clear. hes old and looks like he is going to fall apart by walking. he will tell you his test is on one subject but it will really be on something totally different. he is a horribe teacher.

He's so old, I cannot believe he's still teaching. All his tests are open book, i never got below a 90% on any of them. Sometimes if you just teach yourself by reviewing the book its easier (thats what i did and got an A). He takes attendance but it doesnt count for anything. Very boring and dull teacher, but an easy A with little effort.

Really old and adorable. He really cant teach, he teaches in terms that dont exist today. If you have a question he wont understand your question and tell you something totally different. His class goes by extremely slow and he does take attendance. Labs are hell. Try to get another proffesor!
