Comment:
Dr. New is the most learned professor I've had. An hour and a half with him is more rewarding than a semester with other professors. This is the professor of your dreams and nightmares. He gave me my only B at UF and it was well worth it. If I could do my undergrad over I would take all of Dr. New's classes regardless of his contempt for me.

Comment:
Had Melvin New as freshman English prof at Vanderbilt in 1964. Based on others' negative comments, he hasn't changed much since then. He had NO use for engineering majors in his English 101a-b level classes, as he made clear on Day 1. He admitted he wished he could give me a lower grade on a paper, but that it was too good for him to do so.

Dr. New was a truly awesome professor, a great intellectual who really teaches you how to read a text and analyze it. He was my favorite instructor in the English department.

Oh goodness, Dr. New ruined the semesters of some of UF's finest English majors--what a load of slop. Dr. New generally fails people who belong in either Journalism or the greeting card industry. This was a great man.

Really great Prof--one of the best I've had. In my experience, the people who think otherwise have simply not been willing to put forth the effort. Getting straight A's in our English dept is not very hard--so few courses are really challanging and worthwhile. Stop whining, read, go to class, write good papers--and you might actually learn somethin

I know he's retiring, so this doesn't really matter, but I had to say something. Probably the harshest, most unhelpful teacher I have ever had; does not care for students' well-being, grades based on his favorites... before this class I was a straight A English major in my 5th semester - if I hadn't dropped this class, I would have failed it.

People are saying how stressful this class is and how much it isn't worth it, but they aren't giving it the rating it deserves. This class sucked the life out of me. I know I have to do homework and read, it's why I'm an English major. But he's harsh on grading, your afternoons will vanish, and it will conflict with other classes. I PROMISE.

Tragic thing about this tragedy class is the professor! Long winded, absolutist, not interested in discussion, complicated yet vague essay questions, pop quizzes, have fun!

I know exactly who wrote the comment below me, and trust me-- this person had horrible attendance and never did the required reading. At any rate, Dr. New is an awesome professor and his Shakespeare class was top notch! Make sure you take his Dickens course in the fall; it will definitely be worth your time.

I do not reccomend Dr. New. He is not a fair and just man in his system of grading. Basicly, you have to be in his favor if you wish to pass, because grades are obviously not based upon performance on classwork. Dont put yourself through the stress, choose another professor for your course if possible.

extremely knowledgable and smart. amazing lecturer. nice guy, despite his often harsh sarcasm. but if you don't like reading or constant quizzes (every class period), you probably won't pass.

Definitely do your reading! He's a pretty nice guy but if you ask anything outright stupid expect a sarcastic answer. He's very available during his office hours but doesn't know how to explain meter well;if you don't know poetry get a book to help you learn to read it. He doesn't always have the most constructive criticism-dont take it personally.

i've had him for 2 classes. now on my 3rd. i don't go to class to hear myself talk. i pay someone to tell me about the things in which i'm interested. no one does it better than new. he's intimidating at first, but don't let him fool you. he's a good guy, with a great sense of humor. AND DO YOUR READING! it'll only take an hour for the assignments.

THis is one grumpy old man. His views about lit and theory are archaic and obsolete, almost naive. He is dogmatic and does not know how to create a democratic atmosphere in the classroom. The TAs in this department are so much superior than this guy's class. I got an easy A, but did not learn a damn thing.
