Comment:

Deserves a better rep than she gets. I had a really tough semester in terms of mental illness - despite what would become a prolonged period of absence, Janan went OUT OF HER WAY to listen to me and make me feel comfortable rejoining class and attending on days I wasn't fully able to participate. Kinder than she lets on, and a damn genius to boot.

Comment:

She'll meet you halfway. If you put in the work, effort, and desire to learn, she'll reciprocate. You get what you put in, essentially. She can tell if you're prepared or winging it, and she responds appropriately. She goes off on tangents sometimes, but they're usually interesting and educational tangents that are quasi-relevant to the material.

The reviews here are completely wrong. Her brain moves at warp speed, and she is obviously passionate about what she does. She is an extremely fair grader; if you prepare for class and learn the translations for the exams, you will make an A. It is definitely worth it to take a class she teaches.

Comment:

Professor Janan is a highly intelligent women yet somewhat scatterbrained. The class content (Mythology) was very interesting & all of the readings were manageable. The 1pg writing assignments became sort of a joke to the class, none of us had high hopes when it came to the grades. She does seem to grade the midterms on an easier scale.

I think Professor Janan is a brilliant, but I cannot understand why she puts students on the spot the way she does. She can be biting, rude, unnecessarily angry, and just seems evil. I suspect she has some issues outside the class that she is bringing into her teaching. I'm sure she's a lovely woman, she just seems evil in class.

Micaela is probably the funniest human being I have ever met. Go into Latin 1 willing to do homework (or just cheat and get translations online like I do) and willing to laugh in class because whether or not she intends it, Micaela will knock you dead. BTW not a great teacher but Latin 1 is not very hard.

Janan is a scholar. True, her bizarre eighties throwback miniskirts, sinewy limbs and fatal dental problems are a turnoff, but her grading policies are perfectly fair and she never tests material that is not first covered in class. Her only passion is the material she teaches, and she inspires a greater understanding of the language and the text.

she's really not as bad as all this. was actually a pretty easy grader. i almost didn't take a class recently because of the reviews here and it would've been a huge mistake. not a mean person, just a socially challenged one. has an incredible knowledge of latin and more.

I don't like to call people evil, but Janan is pure evil. I've never met a more unpleasant human being in my life. She's intelligent and knows the material. However, she grades so randomly, and strictly it is impossible to do well. My avg. before I dropped the class was a C- and I'd never gotten anything below a B+ in any class, *ever*. Stay away!

I normally don't post these, but Janan deserves it. She single-handedly destroyed my desire to learn or study latin. I seriously considered minoring in latin before her class, which was first semester freshman year; I have yet to recover enough to take a second, and I'm now a second-semester junior. If you respect yourself, just say no. No.

We focused on minute details at the expense of larger themes. Grading was very strict, but while other difficult classes make me raise my game, this one left me flummoxed. I didn't get an A and don't know how I could have. Nine classes were cancelled. I wish I'd transferred out in January.

A rather eccentric woman, Janan seems to have a very random grading scale--I reprinted a poem from her translation verbatim and recieved a B+ on the test. Not terribly difficult, however, and she seems to know the material quite well.
