Insane amount of tedious reading, but ultimately incredibly rewarding when complemented by Bernstein's wonderful lectures. His humor is totally elitist but that doesn't make it unfunny.

Comment:
The pace necessitated by the course is in my opinion detrimental to reading Proust. I can see why many people enjoy the professor, but I found his style pedantic and unnecessarily repetitive and thought his humor was elitist.

Amazing professor. He's first and foremost a lover of literature and he makes you share that love. He makes Proust relevant to your life, making the text that much more intriguing. The reading IS a big time commitment, but you CAN do reasonably well without getting through it all if you prepare properly for the exams (format is told in advance).

His Proust class is amazing, and is one of those you'll be really happy to have taken. Bernstein obviously loves Proust's writing and will make you fall iin love with it too. He gets a little tangential and rambly in lectures but is also very funny and is always willing to listen to what you have to say.

proust course was sometimes tedious and lagging, but every one of those moments was matched by an equally profound and deeply insightful moment. you better keep up with the insane reading amounts.
