His tests are NOT cumulative. Some of the questions are really specific, but he discounts questions a majority of the class gets wrong. He gives really clear guidelines for the two jazz jam/concert reviews which are really fun. He's willing to bump your grade up if you're close to the next letter grade and you worked hard on the reviews. easy gened

He is very passionate about jazz and is a really nice guy. His lectures get really boring and long (I almost fell asleep a lot) and the powerpoint slides are really wordy. BUT I didn't really read the textbook and just studied the online material before tests and still did well and got an A in the class. Cool guy to talk to about music and jazz.

Professor Carbone loves jazz and it was a cool class. His lectures do get long and boring, and you definitely do have to read the textbook to have a test, but overall his class isn't too bad. As long as you study a day or two before the tests, and don't procrastinate on concert reviews, you should be fine.

I took jazz history from him and that was a huge mistake. We had 2 concert reviews which he care too much. My grades were 74, 80 and 88 respectively and I got c+. He decreased my total grade by giving lower grades for reviews and he doesn't care. If you are not a native speaker , don't take his classes.

He is a nice man, but his lectures can be a little boring and often don't provide the specifics needed to answer exam questions. He gives hard exams, but he does try to make them as fair as possible. He removes questions that the majority got wrong, and sometimes includes extra credit questions based on lectures. Reports are graded fairly, too.

He is a nice guy, but if you do not have a background in music or jazz I would not take this class, especially for the gen. ed. 90% of your grade is made up of test scores and his lectures are not much help. His lectures are copy and pasted right from the textbook, so if you do not want to go to class you don't need to.

Carbone loves Jazz and it shows. His goal for the class is for you to understand the basics of Jazz and hopefully appreciate it too. If you do the readings the class is an Easy A. You can probably still score well without doing the readings, though, I'd recommend doing them.

Professor Carbone is really passionate about jazz, and I would recommend this course to anyone also at least interested in jazz. The grading was pretty clear, but you really need to keep up with the readings because that helps a lot on tests. The tests were decent with some pretty specific questions, but nothing unmanageable. Great class!

Carbone is genuinely interested in getting his students to share his love for jazz. However, if your looking for an easy A credit, this is not the class. The tests are hard and the concert reviews are a pain in the ass. It is an intro-level music course, but it is geared towards those with prior knowledge of musical structure. Not worth the time.

He is a very great guy but his class can be pretty boring. An A is totally achievable but it requires work and studying. There are three tests that are not cumulative. You won't do well unless you read the chapters and study a couple days before. If you do that though, you will be successful and get a good grade. He really wants you to love jazz.

Unless you are actually into jazz, i don't recommend. Not an easy A. He is unclear about what exactly is on exams and expects you to know everything. Prepare to have to leave campus for two assignments that require you to analyze jazz performances which is very stressful if you don't know music theory. I like him as a person, but not as a prof.

Professor Carbone is extremely passionate about jazz and he makes what could be dry material interesting. I always found myself looking forward to class and the tests were fairly easy if you read the chapters. If you hate jazz this might not be the class for you, but if you like it or are at least interested in it this is a great aesthetics gen ed.

Professor Carbone is extremely passionate about what he's teaching. He genuinely wants all of his students to love jazz like he does. He is very helpful and a great professor. He will get you to like jazz, probably more than you did before. As long as you do the readings and listenings, Jazz in American Music isn't bad at all.

Professor Carbone is an awesome teacher! I have him for Jazz Ensemble, and I couldn't ask for a better director. He is very enthusiastic, and he knows how to get us to play our best. I'm also taking a class on jazz improvisation with him, and I've learned a lot already.

He is real jazz man. He will eventually get you into the Jazz world and you gonna like Jazz after taking this class. Although it is not easy A because mandatory to attend the class and need to write about 3 Jazz report which is kind pain in the ass. But if you like Jazz and listening music highly recommend.

Jazz in American music was a great class. Wouldn't call it an easy A because you really need to do all the listening and reading, but when you do you get an A. Regardless of that, take this class to get a stronger appreciation for music.
