I loved taking virology with Dr Hynes. He is not only a great professor due to his passion and enthusiasm but also his compassion towards students. I would take another class with him anytime.

At first he seemed super nice and caring, but then he suddenly became degrading and rude to the class. He teaches well and knows his material, but I don't like his attitude. He uses a lot of the same questions from previous midterms and finals so definitely use those to study because the exams are all written.

He actually cares about you and how you do. He is a chill marker but you still have to show that you understand things. The final is basically as difficult as the midterms so use your paper and presentation to bring up your mark if possible

Dr. Hynes is one of the best profs in bio department. He truly cares for his students and will try his best to make sure they succeed. The class itself is interesting but requires a lot of hard work. Exams are all written. The final exam (cumulative) was particularly very hard and long (average66%). He was very lenient when marking term papers.

This is definitely one of my favourite courses in university and Hynes was amazing teaching it. Exams were slightly more challenging compared to other courses because he expects you to be able to apply everything you remember into solving problems not just memorization alone. Definitely would take a class with him again

I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, he was very clear about expectations and what you should know. He's sweet in that he'll know who you are by name and will approach you in the hallway if he sees you. Final exams are cumulative. If you pay attention in lectures and review your notes often, should be a pretty straight forward class :)

Great prof, super willing to help with anything. If he explains how to do a particular experiment, WRITE IT DOWN because that's what will be on the test. He always gives you the most marks he can, never deliberately tries to fail people or give them bad marks.

A class in which you def. learn A LOT! By far, my most fav bio class. Have to work really hard esp. if you haven't taken CMMB443 or 451...but attend ALL lectures + start memorizing early b/c most of his questions are essay based + application. Fair marking.

Scary smart professor. High level of application in exams and assignments but decent. You need to have a very good working knowledge of how to do experiments,cmmb451 or similar course would be VERY useful taken before.

Great proff, very interested in what he is teaching. I found him extremely approachable in any questions I had about assignments or exams. Exams grades seem a bit arbitrary, but overall still fair.

Would have liked it if he had been more clear on several bacterial genetics concepts in class. However, overall a good prof so long as you read your textbook.

"His notes are meant to highlight imporant concepts..not TEACH them." OK GENIUS. A professor's job is to TEACH the students, not highlight the bloody textbook! I didn't pay $500 for a crap lab of flies, bacteria & a highlighted textbook. Some actual TEACHING would be nice in this class. Bring back Hansen - at least he taught us actual material.

His section on the final wsa insane. Lectures were ok but he is not really helpful in clarifying any information. The most you get is, "Direct recall from lecture".

Very nice professor. His notes are generally not great, but he does at least tell you which sections/questions are relevant in the textbook. Also: make sure to study any examples/questions he goes over, as many of them reappear on the midterm and final.

Very nice man. The only reason people are complaining about him is because you probably didnt read the textbook pages along with his notes. His notes are meant to highlight imporant concepts..not TEACH them. Very approcable, he helped me out a lot when I was struggling with concepts. Great professor.

A decent prof for a relatively interesting class. Would suggest taking Microbial Phys before taking this class or you may be a little lost during some of the genomics material. Overall, helpful, patient, and a decent sense of humour.

Wow, I don't know what all of these people are talking about, Hynes was great when he taught 231, maybe 311 was too hard for some people. He's an awesome prof, and his exams are really easy if you have a general idea of what's going on.

He's really arrogant - thinks he knows everything. And his tests are like trick questions - it's no wonder that people on average failed his section of the test. Thank goodness for Hansen.
