The best political science professor I've ever had! To those who rated Kanner badly, they probably did not pay attention or did the readings. The powerpoint slides are there to help guide thru class discussion, not filled w/ info. Showing up to lecture is a MUST but worth it. Examples are important, and exam ?'s are based on the debates in class

Dr. Kanner is a no-nonsense professor who has extensive knowledge/background in government and the military. His lectures are very analytical in nature and he constantly challenges students to think critically and defend their reasoning. He can be very assertive, but if that doesnt bother you, he is an excellent teacher.

First off, Dr. Kanner can come off as a bit intimidating at first. But just go to his office hours and always take notes and you'll do well. He's absolutely willing to help you if you put in the work. Examples are key.

EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES. Pay attention in class & take notes, you'll get all the required info for the exams, always jot down the examples. It took me a while to figure out how important examples are, otherwise I do believe I would've got an A; so use lots of examples from the start! He's a great guy though, I learned a lot.

Kanner is great. Lots of people don't like him because he picks at your opinion and argues with you. It will make you feel real stupid if you can't defend your position. He upsets some people for this reason. If you can defend your opinions, you'll love this class.

Dr. Kanner is the worst professor i have ever had. Not only is he ignorant and closed minded but he is an obvious sexist. He thinks students are soldiers, and makes fun of millennials because he is an angry old man. I have never had a worse professor in my life. I learned nothing from this class. Seriously, find another professor for this class!

Dr. Kanner is my favorite teacher at CU. His lectures are fun and informative. While difficult at the start, he is a truly great teacher. The people who complain about the class simply don't realize that you must pay attention to the questions at the end of the slide and his debates on the topic. Definitely an acquired taste.

Incredibly smart, but not good at telling you what you need to know. Gets sidetracked constantly to talk about this own experience or to purposefully start an argument with students about their opinions. Tests are horribly constructed and are structured on your opinion not on hard facts you might have learned. Always has a strong right-wing bias.

Prof Kanner is very knowledgeable and a good lecturer. He strongly encourages participation, and frequently enjoys debating students and frequently will destroy you if you are wrong or your opinion is bad. A little intimidating but also quite funny to see 'that kid who talks too much' get wrecked. No tests, only papers. Reading is a must(PSCI3143)

Personally disappointed in this class. We have only finished the first exam. Lecture slides aren't very useful and the "study guides" are useless. Tough grader, probably far too tough. Only there because it fits into my major somehow....

While Kanner may be intimidating at first he is an amazing professor who is highly intelligent. He has a no BS teaching style which is really nice. Tests are short answer which is awesome. In order to do well you really need to go to class. Overall he's an awesome professor, probably one of the best ones at CU.

Professor Kanner is the best I have ever had! Be warned though, if you do not have a moderate understanding of modern military stuff at large you may struggle for a bit. Pay attention to the lectures! All exams are short answer. The most important part of the exams are coming up with real life examples to support your claims.

Extremely knowledgable about what he is teaching, he makes all the papers very clear with what you want so it's hard not to get a decent grade. He challenges you to think a lot, just make sure if you have any opinions you can back them up with examples.

Dr. Kanner is awesome. I've learned more in his class than any other. He seems to know anything about everything regarding the class, you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Incredibly smart, and an easy grader if you go to class and put in the effort the few days before a test to find examples to back up your answers. Highly recommend

Kanner is such a rare find at CU Boulder. He is a Libertarian, insanely intelligent and knows how to teach. The classes are lectured but he often asks student's opinions, so it is discussion based. Highly recommend!!!

Dr. Kanner is extremely knowledgable and truly challenges students to think critically and form their own opinions. He is a Libertarian which is a breath of fresh air in the CU PolicyIafs department and he respects all opinions as long as they are well supported unlike other professors i've had.
