Comment:
Mixed feelings. For a class that attempts to cover California history in one semester, he did a good job working around highlights, structuring the units around historical controversies. But there was little-to-no attention paid to women in history, very problematic. Also, too lecture-centric for a senior class, I thought. Learned a lot though.

Comment:
His lecture covers one part of the topic, the textbook another, and the reader a more in depth analysis of said topic. The lecture quality is somewhat lacking, as Magliari is highly intelligent though the tests dont seem to cover what he lectures. 3/5. Knowledgeable but if you learn more through lectures his class can be frustrating.

Be sure to have the book and read each week for tests. Class is not mandatory, but he does notice if you show up and ask questions. Tests once a week, very straight forward. It was an interesting class! I would take it again

I took Dr. Magliari for HIST442 and HIST445 and will probably take him again. He knows his history. But you need to work for it. Any problems you have, he is available. Both classes had multiple exams and a final. A LOT of reading is required, not just in the textbook, but the course reader that has articles. Work hard, your grade will reflect it.

I took his classes in the late '90s. His tests had nothing to do with lectures, and there was a massive difference in scoring between male and female students. There was a controversy there. He doesn't want any sort of analysis in tests. His public history classes were great, though. Tough as heck. Excellent lectures and knows his stuff.

Professor Magliari is serious about his subject, and you will have to work for a good grade. But, being an upper division course focusing on a specialized topic, what else should one expect? I worked hard, but enjoyed every minute. He is an engaging lecturer, and very well versed with the subject matter.

His class is interesting but his tests are impossible. He seems to enjoy watching his students fail because that is the only reason he would choose to make a test the way he does. When you go to his office his arrogance will leave you frustrated and unsure of why he is even there

seems like a cool guy, but his tests are ridiculous. asks obscure questions including questions on his personal opinions. the lectures are entertaining but the tests are hard

Said the class would be like one thing but it turns out to be completely different. He was useless when I came in for help. In class he would skip over major details in history. Quizzes were difficult.

The lectures don't pertain to the tests. He picks the most minute of material to test you on. He even goes so far as to ask you what --HIS-- opinion is on "x" on the test. Read the course reader because that's his god. It's really f-ing dumb though. Literally, one of the worst set-ups for a class I've ever seen.

Professor Magliari's quizzes are very difficult. The readings are in depth and he expects a lot of his students. However, if you study for the quizzes than you shouldn't have too much of a problem. He is always available to help and just a ton about the subject. I really enjoyed the class and learned more than in any other History class I've taken.

WORST teacher at chico state. AVOID his class. tests completely irrelevant to lectures. lectures are long boring and useless, tends to ramble on about the same thing over and over & not test on it.... horrible teacher. oh & he is no where near hot for whoever put that chili pepper.

Good lecturer, and good choice in textbook. The articles are generally very dry, and hard to read/memorize to the depth required. Geographical maps memorizationalso required. Tests are very nitpicky.

Great lectures! I also really enjoyed the format of the class with the "dueling historians". I had issues with the tests (multiple choice questions aren't always clear). I also had some difficulty with the maps (not a great visual memory) but I loved the way he lectured and used articles instead of the usual textbook.

Best teacher I've ever had at Chico State. His class was actually challenging. (His multiple choice questions are the hardest multiple choice questions you'll ever encounter.) Very engaging lecturers and great, droll wit.
