Dr. Mayer is truly amazing, he does seem harsh in the beginning, but he is more than willing to help pre-law undergrads grow and learn. Give him a chance, he never fails to challenge you but will also make you 20x better.

Very challenging, but will absolutely give you as much support as you are willing to ask for/work for. Don't be put off by intense lecture style. He expect a lot, so do the work every time and you will get a lot out of it. Most people that don't like Mayer are the ones argue with him after not doing their work first. Respects REASONED disagreement

One of the best instructors in the history department, but certainly the least loved. It doesn't help that he thinks UM students are incorrigibly dumb and lazy (and let's face it, UM doesn't exactly have the highest admissions standards). This means, however, that if you convince him that you're not, he will take an interest in you.

Boring teacher. I love American History. And he has made me not like it because of his terrible teaching style. He always showed up late and lectured over the time limit. The only redeemable quality was I had a good TA.

I took a 5 week summer course. It seemed like the course was a full length course crammed into 5 weeks. There was A LOT of reading material close to 50 pages a night. Only 2 assignments each worth 50% of the grade, although attendance is factored in somehow... He will help if you can catch him during his office hours

This is a teacher who only will help those who help themselves. He may be a bit standoffish, but its just a front. He's always willing to speak to you about anything, and will always sit down with you to discuss grades, or just have a chat. His classes are fun and he will make sure you know the information. Give him a chance, you might be surprised

Easily the worse professor I had at UM. He appears to be interested in recruiting like-minded people to be his minions rather than educating students to be critical thinkers. A deeply irresponsible teacher and an unpleasant man. Don't let him scare you away from the otherwise wonderful history department!

Such a horrible teacher. He was biased, often late for class, rude, and just came off as a mean and grumpy. I learned NOTHING from him- and the TAs weren't much better. At least mine recognized Mayer's bias. Don't take unless you absolutley have to

The guy is a jerk. His lectures are fairly informative on random details that don't really help in the long run. Full of himself and has no care for his students. His choice in TA's are terrible too as they are the worst I've ever experienced. If forced to take a history class take Volks he is way better.

This guy is satan. Almost acts like he wants his students to fail from his attitude. Every day he seems to bring the students down with this negative pointless lectures. He just....really..is just a bad person....like....all the way to the core. DO NOT take any classes with him unless it is completely nessessary.

Taken 3 classes, preparing for a fourth. Can rip you and your arguement/paper/dignity to shreds. You either love him or despise him. If you can handle his style, you will learn a lot. He forces you to be careful with your choice of words when shaping any statement. Does attack mistakes, but also rewards accuracy. You will be a better student after.

Took 151 Rev-to civil war first semester with volk and loved it, really was looking forward to 152, mayer was the teacher and absolutly hated it. Worst case of napolean complex i've ever seen, man must recored his voice and listen to it at night to help him sleep.
