Comment:
Oh Murray... He's sort of a character within the department. Basically he's nearly impossible to understand; both in what he says and what he writes (try reading his comments on papers...it's painful). Bottom line: not much work but a very boring class. Avoid him if you can - you WILL regret the time you wasted in his class...bearable though.

Here is my advice. Before signing up for this class go to the library and read couple pages of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. This is more or less how Mr. Murray speaks. The class is great if you have the energy to actually figure out what the hell is going on. It takes a bit of doing though.

Mr. Murray seems like a cool guy who definitely knows what he's talking about, but his lectures feel pretty long and dull. Be prepared for the infamous handwriting, and definitely pay attention and go to class, because if you don't read or understand the text, you'll be lost.

MM illuminates philosophical texts in a thorough way. He's clearly wicked smart if a little meandering, and he always looks so strangely attractive with those rolled-up sleeves and hairy forearms.

Consistently gave me low grades on papers accompanied by extensive commentary. It would have helped if I could read them...

Murray is a funny guy but not the clearest in thoughts or handwriting. Doesn't always explain things well, and disregards philosophers he does not like (i.e. aquinas). Best to read the assignments if you want to learn. Not many assignments given

Michael Murray is the classic philosopher. He rambles on, makes little aside comments that are amusing and is pretty damn clear even if you dont do the reading. He's a little difficult to approach, but a nice guy in general and as an intro class - not too difficult. few assignments.

I actually feel I learned from this class even though I stopped doing the reading and I didn't particularly pay attention during class. Working through the essays and tests taught me a good amount. The readings are hard as it's 18th and 19th century philosophy and Murray does kind of ramble and it's VERY hard to read his handwriting (he admits)

Hes a pretty good professor, but if he finishes his lesson early, he tends to ramble a bit. HIS HANDWRITING IS AWFUL!!!!

I really liked MM. The class was very straightforward and I absorbed a lot (I still remember "physis hides") and other tidbits from my class, and that was a while ago! Great style, too- white hair, white shirts, black jeans. Wish I had taken Philosophy of Aesthetics from him.

Dudes, his class is okay and the material discussed is pretty cool, but he as a professor is not that good.
