I get that if you don't have a Philosophy background he may be difficult, but the reviews below don't paint a fair picture of Dr. Berman. The guy is one of the best in the department by a mile. He is brilliant, insightful, and challenging. He makes you care about the content. You need to try in his course, but that is what university is all about.

Very bright and insightful. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions during lecture - sometimes he strays away from his point. With a little direction, Berman will provoke your interest in the subject matter. However, for the non-enthusiastic students that will try to avoid readings or attending lecture: good luck. You're going to get a brutal mark.

Made a cross listed phil/intercultural studies course with no phil pre-requiste COMPLETELY geared toward the phil side. The only students who seemed to excel were phil students because of the abstract concepts he used. He needs to keep in mind who the course is available to when creating his lectures. Wouldn't take another of his classes

Berman was a great professor. I had him for 8 months and learned a lot. He is married to a computer science professor who specializes in AI, which is interesting because AI has a big philosophy aspect - one that Berman is also interested in. There is a lot of reading in this course. You read at home and discuss the philosophy in lectures and semina

In his logic class he would answer any question a student had, was an awesome seminar leader and easy to talk to. Go to class though, even though it's not mandatory you understand it a lot better and quicker.

HARD HARD HARD! Students who wish to take this class as an elective BEWARE. It is impossible to do well in this class unless you have a philosophy background. What a waste of an elective - an interesting class, but when you're getting 90s in every other course and 60s in this class, it says something.

What a terrible experience. His class was excrutiatingly boring, and he does not "know his stuff". He would repeat what we had read that week, except for some tangeants he thinks are great for teaching. They're not. The material was amazing, the prof was far from it.

Very approachable, but no matter how much he claims the contrary Berman does have a point of view, and to counter this view (on paper)is to sacrifice your grade.

I am not a philosophy major, yet this is the second time that I am taking a philosophy course because I enjoy professor Berman so much. Yes his lectures can be confusing but what does one expect when they take philosophy it's a difficult course! He is such a nice man, and so easy to approach and he will answer any question you have!! awesome guy:)

he doesn't seem to be able to complete a sentence from beginning to end without a thousand interjections which makes taking notes very difficult. his also likes to speed talk which can be difficult if you are hearing certain ideas and thoughts for the very first time - despite doing the readings.
