I have enjoyed having him as a professor. If you try and engage yourself it really counts for something. He knows topics that are more interesting to younger generation students and doesn't grade too harshly. Overall I liked his teaching style. It was a lot of lecture but enough for discussion too.

Nice guy, pretty helpful, but the lectures weren't very interesting. I'm very interested in communications but he seemed to repeat things a lot and go on about things that weren't relevant. He was willing to look at people's rough drafts of papers and such though which was nice, and the class wasn't too hard.

Dear god there was a 15 page research paper, 15 page midterm and a 15 page final, this was supposed to be an intro class but it was harder than the 300 level I was taking at the same time.

Professor Bartanen is without a doubt the worst professor I have yet to encounter at PLU. I did not write him off right away and I tried to be reasonable. He assigns a 20 page paper in a 100 level class and grades you based on that and two essay tests. Avoid him at all costs, he isn't helpful and his arrogance will disgust you.

Not helpful. At all! He is very unclear as to what he's looking for. It seems that his class was thought out to be very ecofriendly with ebooks and such but not on how to teach the students. I agree that he plays favorites. He claims to have no length requirements but marks you down for not being long enough...

eeew, i hated that class. Had to write something everyday. The final paper was evil. He made you do drafts which is nice so I didn't procrastinate but he wasn't clear on what he wanted and he changed his mind all the time. The class was a waste of time. I didn't learn anything except to appreciate my other professors.

My first COMM prof at PLU, not a bad teacher, make sure you don't write more than an assignment requires (he dings for that). Overall pretty reasonable about grading and assignments, a fair 101 class. Has moments of humor and/or genius.

He encourages you to turn in drafts of your papers to him for review. 3 times in a row, he made a few grammatical changes, & told me I had an A paper. When I turned in the corrected final draft, I recieved C's on each paper. His lectures are dry, & he tries very hard to be young.
