Comment:
Mike is very passionate about teaching as much as he is about photography. He really cares about the students' improvement technically and conceptually. He will give you strange assignments and readings, but they all have purposes. In retrospect, you will understand how deliberate each of them are. Take a class with him before you graduate.

Mike will challenge you, and at moments the time demanded by this course felt overwhelming, but I gained so much artistically and personally from his class. While he did emphasize technique, he was most interested to see us taking creative risks... scary but very rewarding. Though stern and direct, he's caring and passionate about making photos.

It is always made clear that Photo I is time consuming, but with Mike it makes putting in the effort very difficult. His assignments are unnecessarily strange and not relevant, and he has done little to help me further my printing skills after the first few weeks.

Mike Kolster is an extremely enlightened individual. In his class I learned to better view my own life and life around me through new and interesting perspectives. In many ways Kolster could be considered a philosphy teacher. He is a very kind, caring, and understanding man. The work load is heavy, but it is mainly taking pictures : )

Has a vivid personality. Occasionally tells you about really random things, but is always interesting. Definitely has photo preferences, but I tend to favor the same things, so not a problem for me. Creative assignements and interesting, short reading articles. Warning: Photo takes SO MUCH TIME and it costs about $300 for the semester.

Comment:
Affords less freedom in many respects than other professors. Can be confusing and is very set in his ways. Definitely has artistic preference. That said: demands alot, but is extremely generous with his time and resources. Fantastic teacher.
