Best CHP class I have taken. A bio course, but more emphasis on "soft science". Not much work outside class - short readings, review for quizzes. But have to be attentive in class: in-class quizzes and questions live during lecture; these can sometimes be tricky. Prof says he set up the course to force us to learn, and he succeeds.

Teaches well. Not a tough grader. Just read the book and attend lectures.

Very straight forward CHP requirement. 5 question quizzes every day from the reading. Weird final.

He talks slowly, but he's kind of very prominent in his field. I fell asleep in a lot of his lectures.. I think he's a good teacher overall, but the exam on evolution ('scenario based') were a little wack, in the sense that you do have to THINK about answering questions, but you have to "think" about it in the "right" way -- his or his TA's way

Took him over the summer. There were 8 quizzes, two lowest was dropped. So 6 quizzes count for 60% of grade and was made by TA. Final was 40% of grade and it was somewhat like true and false except he put it as "likely" or "unlikely" and you have to answer that given a scenario. Final was open book. Overall not bad, but somewhat boring class.

Rose taught the first half of E106; Hawkins did the latter half. Interesting professor; very English. 16 quizzes in the quarter = 1 quiz/day for 60% of the grade. Midterm was 20%, final (with Hawkins) 20%. Midterm was open book/notes with questions/answers given in lec. If you go to lec and dis, its hard not to get an A. He seems unapproachable.

Comment:
His class isn't too hard, but he's not that great of a teacher. He makes the midterm open book, and leaves out details in the lecture notes because he wrote the book and wants to sell more copies. His quizzes are fair, but his midterm is subjective, you have to answer the questions in his words, but he also gives you the questions ahead of time.

Terribly boring class. Every lecture he would make some reference to the fact that we were "non-majors" and then proceeded to treat us as ignorant to any biological concepts. You don't even need to stay IN lecture because the Powerpoints are posted online and the quizzes come straight from the textbook - which he wrote anyways.

This class was really interesting. Rose is a great professor, but Mueller is kind of boring. Just go to lectures, then you don't have to read the book much. The graphs are kind of confusing, but overall, a good class. Ask questions if you don't understand something. Rose explains it very well. Weekly quizzes, midterm, and final. Very easy--

the text book sucks and is very unclear but i read everything. His lecture is pointless, cuz he just reads it off the book ... i got an A in the class tho although i think this class is somewhat difficult

I absolutely loved Dr. Rose-lectures were clear& interesting& i looked forward to his class! His test was a bit challenging, but if u understood the concepts it was easy-it was open book for god's sake all u had to do was reason-you could bring any notes in w/ u. I admit the daily quizes were stessful--but kept u from getting behind on reading

He has an odd sense of humor, but he's funny nevertheless. He is at first intimidating when you go to his office, but it's never anything personal against the student. And if you get to know him better, he is actually very kind, interesting, and definitely smart.

Okay this guy, like all the rest say, spends his lecture trying to make jokes; most of the time about sex. They really aren't funny, but at least he knows what he's teaching. I really liked Weis a lot better!
