Comment:

She does try to be funny and try to engage the class. A lot of the homework was from a french website or the textbook, which is easy to do. I did all the homework easily but when it came to the exams I did poorly. She cares about her students, displaying concern when they were doing poorly in exams. The only problem is that she speaks/teaches fast.

Suprisingly did well but class can be very difficult. She has a good humor but what she teaches in class doesn't always prepare you for the tests so really do alot of studying on the chapters outside of class and practice speaking it.

Prof. Catel is a nice lady who cares about her students, but the work can be tedious and frankly boring at times. You will get on her good side as long as you do your stuff and participate in class. For 303 her exam questions came right from the book so it was important to read. Her classes are not easy, though, you have to work very hard for a 4.0

Comment:

Catel is a nice person, and she does have a dry sense of humor. However, she is a terrible teacher. She speaks way too quickly (especially on tests) and skips parts of the chapters, then expects you to know material you never learned for quizzes and tests. The quizzes don't always match what is on the exams either. Very difficult to learn from.

You will do a ton of writing in this class, usually an essay for each chapter that you keep revising. She will have you keep a journal and a personal dictionary for words you learn. She is a very fair grader, though, and I did learn a lot of new words and phrases in the class. The textbook is a must have. Her grammar exams were also pretty simple.

Mme Catel is okay, though I don't know how I would do if I hadn't had prior French knowledge. She is kind of all over the place and expects us to pick things up immediately after being taught them. Overall she is okay, just make sure you have time to study and do the work.

Mme Catel is awesome! Her class was always fun and she engaged everyone inside and outside of class! She really cares about her students too. Even though she might not be the most organized or clear, stay on her good side and do the work and you'll get a good grade!

Fun class. Prof Catel takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's not difficult. show up, take notes, do homework & assignments, ask questions, and a 4.0 is easily attainable.

GREAT professor! she is easy to talk to and will answer any questions! Makes the class as fun and relatable as possible. People who don't like her generally are not doing any work outside of class and expecting to learn french from just showing up. She picks on students because they aren't trying! or make silly mistakes! learn to laugh.

worst professor ever! she didn't teach and made fun of the students! i don't know how she got hired and why she's still teaching! i didn't learn anything cause she just played these stupid online games with herself and we were expected to "learn" from that. worse french class i've ever taken!!!

Catel is erratic, prone to emotional outbursts, and is unpredictable. Despite her supposed expertise in teaching via technology, most of the class failed her exams. Her powerpoints were atrocious, unprofessional, and scattered. What we were told to study usually wasn't on the exam. She had a bitter attitude in general. A horrible experience.

Very easy class if you know your stuff. I don't remember ever doing homework or anything besides taking her tests which are fairly easy and I got a 3.7 which is what I deserved. If you don't know your stuff, show up to class, pay attention and take notes and you should have no trouble in the class at all.

I was really scared to take her 103 class because of everything I heard- but if you take the Winterim...it is a complete joke and she is wicked nice. She let us retake all our tests and play Sims in French. If you have to take 103, take the Winterim.

Catel is the worst professor I had at Potsdam. She is scattered, unpredictable, and shrill. All I could think of in her classes was that I could never get the hours of my life back. I got an A in her class, so it's not sour grapes. She's just a bad teacher. Luckily, I already knew enough French to get by without learning anything from her.

Terrible. Doens't really teach. Half the time we play stupid games that don't teach anything. She expects the class to teach themselves. It really refects her teaching style when more than half a class fails a test. Doesn't care about teaching. Terrible.

I do not understand the point of this course at all and I feel like I have learned nothing from it. I have NO IDEA what my grade is because every person in the class has failed the tests, even the native speakers. She makes fun of the people in the class, most of whom are French Majors or Minors. Seems that she doesn't care about teaching anymore.
