Comment:

Although this course was a significant amount of work, it was awesome! Dr. Gunn expects a lot for a 100 level course, but it covers so a huge amount of material. If you take it serious and stay up on the work you will learn a lot. it is very nice when corresponding via email--this is a difficult but rewarding self-study course. Highly recommended.

Gunn is impossible to follow during class- it's clear that she knows all about music theory, but she isn't very good at "dumbing it down" for people with no musical experience. Classes are boring, and often times I would get confused during her lectures after I thought I had learned something in the workbook. Nice woman, difficult professor.

Interesting class. Recommend taking this class if you have to fill a requirement. It is not to hard just go to class and take notes from what she says. Then listen to the music and you will be fine. Very nice person

i dont know what all the fuss is about with other students. not a hard class if you attend class, do assignments and study for exams. Gunn is disorganized and not tech savvy, but no more so than any other artistic person i have met. she knows her stuff and enjoys it, which made it a good class overall. i'd recommend it.

Although this course was challenging, I loved it. She expects a lot for a 100 level course, we had 5 tests and the final, but you learn a lot and are exposed to lots of new music. She knows her stuff, and if you attend class and study you are golden, she is clear about what the test will be on. She is also funny, class time was enjoyable.

A great teacher of music. I can tell she would be even more effective in more advanced courses, as she is not using all of her knowledge in a intro class. Very nice and personable, you can tell she cares! If you have a choice, choose her class!

I agree with the comments below. She can't teach. She's a great musician, and you can tell it's her passion- but she still can't teach. Almost my entire class failed- a class FULL of talented and quite intelligent musicians themselves.

Make sure that you are already familiar with music before taking this class. I've played piano since I was 11, so I'm doing fine. But other people who aren't familiar with music are failing because she moves very quickly over the material. It's a lot to memorize when you don't already know which lines on the staff represent which notes.

She's a great composer, but she should never have taught a class. I can't understand how she keeps getting jobs. I have never seen an entire class fail so epically due to the incompetence of a teacher.

Sometimes I respect her as a teacher, and sometimes I respect her as a person. Basically, she's really unclear about assignments. She doesn't remind the class about projects or anything until the class before they are due, and then gives the class an extension. The thing about getting assignments to her is that email is really unreliable...

This class is the easiest class I have ever taken. I don't know if it's because I play an instrument and have a somewhat musical background, but I found the material very interesting and enjoyed learning it very much. The tests were simple so long as you had listened to the music and attended the lectures.

The best instructor I've had at USM. Her lectures are interesting and extremely clear. Anyone who does not do well in her class either does zero work or hates the material to such an extent that they can't succeed. Her presentation of the material was so interesting. Extremely eager to answer questions.

I took this class for requirements, but I'm glad I took it. Prof. Gunn is wonderful. You can see in her face that she has a passion for the subject and is not just here b/c she has to be. You shouldn't take this class if you are looking for an easy A. It definately requires a lot of study time, but it is very doable. All you have to do is list
