She lacks any ability to explain assignments. Her go-to-response? "Read the directions."No logic whatsoever for point reductions; often subtracts absurd percentages for pettiness. Forget to put your name on an assignment? Minus fifty-points. Turn in work in the wrong order? Minus fifty-points. Extremely disheartening class, to say the least.

I agree with many reviews. She is funny and goofy, but as a teacher she is irritating and often demeaning. I dreaded every session. Class requirements were more tedious than difficult. I expected a lot more from the course, but really, I expected to be treated like an adult, and that just didn't happen. I'd never take her again.

I have divided feelings toward this professor. As a person, she is sweet and hilarious; but as a teacher, she makes you feel like you are in middle school again. Assigned seats, tedious hw and worksheets, and making a good first impression is essential to all future interactions with her.

nice person bad teacher. she acts like its a high school class (assigned seating, all the classwork is old high school work from the 90's)too easy. maybe freshman like that but as a senior its not helpful. also she gives out stickers if you a good job like elementary school. how can you learn to teach from someone who doesn't know how.

Nancy Van is a very sweet lady. She loves teaching and loves her students. She is hilarious and entertaining, but not the best at ensuring you understand the material. The class itself is fairly easy once you understand it. She is an EXTREMELY lenient grader so not making an A in her class means you were just lazy. Only one exam and it's open book.

Mrs. Nancy Van is an absolute delight. I have no idea why some people disdain this teacher. She is a joy to have in the classroom and keeps things interesting rather than mundane. She makes you think creatively and earn your grade-- something good teachers do. TAKE HER!!

From my experience, her class is harder than other discrete math class because she wants you to challenge to solve very hard questions. Her test is not very close to homework and quiz problems. If you can think outside of box and good at test taking then it is ok but if you are not then do not take it. Finally her lecture is very fast and boring

Very good teacher. Will challenge you to think. Assigns homework problems that make you stretch. You will work for your grade. Very strong command of the material.

Took Discrete Math with her. Not a great lecturer, but the book isn't bad. Use the TAs and tutoring to your advantage. Her study guides ARE the test, only vaguer, so know those as well as possible. Even then, though, tests have very hard questions. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK AND QUIZZES FOR EASY POINTS and to not fail the tests.

Awesome teacher, little crazy, awesome teacher though. She runs off on some tangents but you can usually keep her in line if your remind what she's supposed to be doing.

only reason teaches is because husband is a UTD math professor... poor teacher... doesn't understand the material at all... no PHD... Can't answer ?s - must go ask husband... stuck in the hippie generation (60s)... insults students...very caustic to speak to - UTD took her out of advising... thank god... stay away from her if you want to learn...

While this teacher is kind, she is extremely difficult. She is the type of teacher who believes students should mold to her teaching style. A good teacher should mold to the students. You don't yell at a deaf kid until they understand. You find a way to make them understand. Not bad though.

Professor Van is an INCREDIBLE educator! I learned more from her about teaching in the classroom than any other teacher in my life. She's a great instructor, mentor, and facilitator; she teaches by example. Great hats, props, stickers, and visual aids!

She is a teacher that many students are scared of taking. I ignored their advice, and I am very happy about that. She is an excellent professor. Never easy, but always great. A+++
