Being the last class until my graduation, I must say as an overview of my entire time in NMU's French department, Kupper is a pretty mediocre instructor. Hopefully if you're in French you get Foster but there's only a 50/50 chance considering the department is pitifully small. Her assignments would be laughably simple if she would give instructions

A very grammar and vocabulary heavy course. It was basically an overview of everything you've learned thus far in French. Being one of the last courses in the program, I must say the French department is pretty amateur, resourceless, and and a waste of time/money. If you want to major/minor in French, don't bother with NMU, or study something else.

Though a decent teacher, Kupper taught a pretty outdated and useless Conversation course. The whole semester it seemed useless and I felt like I was not getting anything out of it. French, like English, does not always have the same slang it did 30 years ago. And that was my biggest beef with the class. Along with outdated assignments like Audacity

I think Dr. Kupper has a tough time working in a Language Department that has few resources to begin with, and I can't entirely blame her. Though this Composition course was useful in some ways, it was kind of childish with the assignments. Like: "write a fairytale". Really? However, Kupper was pretty fair and expected you to be responsible.

It was a very college-level type of class. Every day was mostly going over French grammar lessons with a lot of writing assignments for homework. However, it did help improve my overall French and the in-class activities and lessons were extremely worthwhile. Dr. Kupper does expect a lot from your work one time and come to class and you'll be okay.

I didn't think the conversation class was really necessary or helpful in a lot of aspects. I don't blame Dr. Kupper, but I think the course itself was structured in a useless way. We had to use audacity quite often and that would make sense if it was still 2002. The class could have been done in a less headache-inducing way, but it wasn't.

The class was not too difficult however it was pretty heavy with writing and compositions obviously. Dr. Kupper is a nice and approachable instructor but she does expect you to do the work and show up. There was a lot of out-loud reading in class, and her corrections of your French speaking might be misinterpreted as impatient but she means well.

Lots of books to read, all French in nature, which got annoying. She's nice and loves discussion and is willing to meet with you to improve your papers. Her lectures definitely can jump all over the place and make your notes disorganized. Both the midterm and final essay were open book and open notes. We discussed readings with partnersin groups.

It is easy to get an A in class if you take really careful notes and just repeat every word said on the exams. Despite getting a good grade, I felt like I learned nothing. There is no structure to the course and it is never clear what is expected of you or why you got the grade you did because there is no rubric or instructions.

Dr. Kupper does take the time to reiterate her directions and comments if you cannot understand her the first time. She is very strict with following the syllabus and assignment instructions, but is willing to work with you if you show interest in your grade and the class material. She does care for her students; however, she does not care for bull

I have had the misfortune of having four classes with Nell and each one was worse than the one before. As the material becomes more advanced, Nell's insufficiencies, as a French speaker, an educator, and a human being become only more pronounced. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to avoid her in the French program. My suggestion: Spanish.

I have had Kupper for about 6 classes since arriving at NMU. She is absolutely my favorite professor by far. She is a little overwhelming the first time around, as she teaches in a very strict manner. She won't take any high school **** from you. But, she will help you to the best of her ability and be honest with you.

I never purchased or thoroughly read a single book in this class...and still got an A. All you need is to mildly listen, take some notes, and have common sense. Kupper isn't helpful though.

Nell is a double-edged sword. On one hand -- like one rater put it -- "regurgitate her buzzwords" and you'll get an easy A. On the other hand, it can be tough to know exactly what she wants from you the first time. Luckily, she will go WAY out of her way to spend time helping students after class.

This PhD needs to learn some teaching methodologies and people skills. Maybe pick a more progressive text than one from the 80s. French in Action is horrible. Also, she either likes or hates you - and it's not your choice.

I had her for a Directed Study and thought she was fabulous, although a bit flaky on the paperwork - almost got charged twice for the same class as a result. English is not her first language, and she can get easily confused if students talk too quickly. She'll bend over backwards for you if you're having problems. Wonderful woman!

When I went to see her during office hours, said she had "5 min left" and closed the door and frowned at me. Great. Then she opend it 5 minutes later, told me I "couldn't speak French," then asked why I was there. And she's head of the French department. That is just peachy. No wonder the program has dwindled to almost a minor. She needs to go
