Monty is great. He's a talented writer who expects a lot from his students and grades fairly. In his intro and 200-level classes especially, he understands that not everyone is the next Dennis Johnson, still he knows when effort has been put into a piece of writing. Definitely recommend his classes, specifically Writing Fiction.

He really makes you work and try hard, but it's worth it. It's a challenging class, but my writing definitely improved over the semester. He gives very helpful notes and suggestions.

good guy, comes across as a bit arrogant, impossible grader. the kinda guy who gives one a in the entire class on papers. might be better for graduate studies, but a little intense for 200 level undergraduate classes at a small school like f and m. this might be ok, but he's not even up front about the level of difficulty. take at your own peril.

Great writer, poor teacher. He is more interested in himself than in encouraging young minds. Don't take all his comments to heart. More helpful to read his work than listen to him grab at irrelevant advice.

He is a complete ass. he loves himself so much I can't believe he has time for anything else. Even if you talk to him he still gives you nothing but bull in response. Don't punish yourself stay away from this evil man.

Professor Montemarano is an excellent teacher. Some have butted heads with him because he prefers certain stylistic approaches to writing fiction, particularly voice-driven rather than plot-driven. He is better at teaching prose than poetry. I'd highly recommend him to just about anyone.

Creative writing was okay. You read a lot of stories. But as he tells us in the beginning, he's not sure if you can TEACH creative writing, you either have it or u don't. As for grades only 10% of the class gets an A, so he tells us.
