Comment:
He is a the type of professor who tries hard to be idolized by students. This is not a good thing. Nor should he take philosophical disagreements so personally. When people disagreed with Sturgeon, I got the sense that he disapproved of them in a moral sense---and that he kind of got off on it. Steer clear.

In short, a great professor. To succeed in his class-attend every single lecture, make exhaustive notes, go to his office hours and he'll be ready to help. But be very careful about each claim you make in your essays-back them up with appropriate reasoning and citation. Prof. Sturgeon is extremely considerate and rewards hard work. Fair grading.

I have taken two philosophy classes with Professor Sturgeon at Cornell, and he is by far the best professor I have ever had. He cares a lot about the subject and also about his students. He is very renowned in his field, so if you are interested in ethics and philosophy definitely take one of his classes!

If you are seriously interested in ethics you will love this class. If not there is a good chance it is very boring. Sturgeon is a litimus test for potential philosophy majors. As a phil major, I cannot speak more highly of him as a prof and a man.

One of the worst professors I have had. He gives the impression that philosophy has less to do with intellectual curiosity than with scoring petty "points" against whomever he's decided to dislike today.

Ethics in philosophy is not the same as ethics in the everyday sense. Sturgeon is a philosophy prof, not a life coach so if you think heĆ¢€™s going to tell you if thing X is right or wrong you are mistaken and will be disappointed. However, if you actually want to learn PHILOSOPHY you will understand that Sturgeon is one of the best profs around.

If you love ethics, you will love professor Sturgeon. He's one of the veterans of the phil department and he's probably the best guy here for ethics. Incredibly intelligent, sweet, and very clear presentation of material in class. Make sure you stay on top of the reading (there's a lot) and a fair bit of writing too -- three 8-pages papers.

Very boring, unclear, and unhelpful. He managed to turn the interesting subjects of ethics into a dull/monotonous (and completely irrelevant) lecture. Stay far away.

repetitive lectures, bad assigments and syllabus, absolutely no application at all... expect to catch an early morning nap. if you're interested in ethics, take one of the classes about a specific area of ethics (medicine, environment, etc). very boring and poorly organized class.

Very boring lecturer. Very unhelpful. Material is not organized; a stream of boring lectures with some notes on the board. He took an interesting subject (Ethics) and taught it in a horrible way- I hope he didn't turn too many people away from phil...maybe that was his goal :(...Stay FAR AWAY.

Consider this an honest opinion from someone who received an A in this class - it sucks. Boring as hell and a total waste of time. I personally now hate philosophy after respecting it beforehand.

The most boring class I've taken. I heard great things about it, but it honestly isn't good unless you have a knack for Phil. Even though it is an intro class, there seems to be a standard to already know about Philosophy. His lectures are boring but thorough and there isn't a clear syllabus.

Fun to listen to and watch. He's quite animated. Repitition is key here. Grading however is a bit strange, but that is on the count of the TAs.
