Comment:

I love Norma! She is very bold and is not afraid to speak her mind so be respectful, but her lectures are extremely engaging and she is very fair if she knows you put in effort. The class I took (Jews and Food) required a bit of background knowledge in Judaism to fully grasp it but overall it was very enjoyable.

Professor Joseph is a teacher that I recommend you take. Her lectures are entertaining and very interesting. There is a lot of reading, but she explains it all in class very well. Her knowledge on the topics is unbelievable.

From a Religion Major: I love Norma so much! She's so animated when giving lectures so her passion & knowledge really shine through. I had a tough time completing work during the semester but she was SO understanding & accommodating with extensions. She really appreciates participation & you will benefit hugely if she gets to know you.

Norma is knowledgable but she is one of the hardest teachers I have taken in university. There are no tests but two assignments and two take home exams. She is an extremely hard grader and if you don't say what she wants to hear, she will give you a bad grade. You have to attend class, she takes attendance. For an elective, way too much work. Avoid

Prof Joseph seems kind and knowledgable, but she is LOST. Screws up dates on her syllabus and take home assignments and is rude when asked to clarify. Mandatory attendance to a class that just repeats what was read in the book is so unnecessary. GET OVER IT Norma. Students who do well on assignments should not be penalized for not always attending.

Comment:

Time and time again Professor Joseph proves how wonderful and passionate she is. This is the second class I've taken with her and I cannot overstate how intelligent and respectable this teacher is. She is a bit of a tough grader and assigns A LOT of reading but otherwise so great! Her lectures are absolutely mesmerizing. Love her!

Pros: Norma is such a great teacher. Super passionate and really cares about the subject matter. No midterm and take home final on readings. Cons: If you don't know much about Judaism beforehand you may have a little trouble and she assigns way too much reading. Not the easiest marker but not bad, just show you care.

Great prof/class. I've had her before but the second time was easier knowing her style, she usually gives 3 papers that are clear and broad enough to exemplify your own ideas. Very approachable, once she knows your trying and show an interest it will reflect in your grade.

Prof. Joseph is truly an amazing professor. She is challenging and knowledgeable, patient and truly cares for the students who put in the effort. She does demand a lot and requires her students to be hard-working critical thinkers...but that's what university is for! Her classes have shaped my time at Concordia and I have much to thank her for!

She is a nice lady. Passionate about what she teaches. Somewhat biased. If you dont agree with her point of view, you will receive a low mark. A bit jumpy with her lecturing. Very knowledgeable; however, expects students to know too much. Prepare to be somewhat lost within the class discussions if you have no prior knowledge. Overall ok.

That voice! Like nails on a chalkboard a or a cat in a blender. She is biased, long winded (and not in a deep introspective way .... she just talks too much, about nothing)she guest lectured another section prompting me to take a couple of her classes BIG mistake. She is biased and plays favourites and did I mention that voice?

Her series of women in Judaism are fascinating. I was registered in the English Dept, until I took Women as Ritual experts, taking a class with Dr. Joseph I changed my degree to Religion. She is a brilliant. Her class are exciting, challenging intellectually and encourage research. Graduated with a BA honnors and MA HP in religion.

In my opinion,she is knowledgeable and inspiring as some have mentioned, but I can also see why some don't really like the class; the course lacks a real introduction to Judaism, you're just sort of tossed into this whirlwind of Judaic issues.There's a lot of reading and much to look up on your own.
