Comment:

One of the worst classes I've ever taken. 4.0 student, got a D, have to retake. Class follows no known structure. Requires text, doesn't use text and the course material barely resembles topics within the textbook. Course grade is dependent on a single final exam. Claims to have additional exams that don't harm you, never explains how that works.

Comment:

Norman is so brilliant. People didn't like his class was because Norman has a really hard time explaining himself, and he thinks that we are on the same educational level as he is (he has like 7 degrees...) He really is the smartest person I've ever met with the crudest since of humor. He's a challenge but I'm glad i had him as a professor.

This was the hardest class I have ever taken, but also I have never learned so much in any other class. You will need to try hard, but the amount of information you receive is amazing. Good luck!

Comment:

This man makes inapproriate comments, and gives us readings not included on the syllabus (which was literally one page and then he changed the course readings two weeks later without fully updating us). He waits until the last minute to tell us what books are due and he doesn't order his books to the bookstore. Love yourself-- don't take his class.

Comment:

To say Dr. Peercy is phenomenally brilliant would be an understatement. Easily outclasses similar professors in his knowledge. However, if you don't have a tough skin, look out -- his sense of humor is rather sharp, and even though he's extremely funny, some may take offense to it. Personally, he's fantastic, knowledgeable, and funny.

To be honest, I really hate his English class. He is so unhelpful and when he does speak it is a confused mess. All we do is write essays about totally random topics, most of which I don't care about at all. He also does not post grades on blackboard so you have no idea where you stand. I hope to never take a class from him again.

One of the worst teachers I have ever had! He wouldn't explain things very well and then get mad when you didn't understand. His tests also had nothing to do with what we talked about in class. DO NOT RECOMMEND if you plan on graduating on time.

Norm is knowledgable and funny. His class was very difficult but he would help you every step of the way. He would even tell you what answers to reexamine on the midterm and final. Learned a great deal about transformational grammar.

Being my first 400 level class, it was a LOT to handle (especially when you can't understand what's going on in class and you can't read his writing on the board). That being said, he is an amazing professor. I wish he taught more than the few classes he teaches.

Comment:

One of the toughest teachers I've ever had. Tough for me to follow the material even when I studied. Clearly knew his stuff, but didn't do to well with explaining terms/vocab. He helped me as best as he could when I went to him. As long as you constantly show him that you are putting in the effort in class, he'll take the time to help you.

This man knows the subject, but he doesn't explain things and he expects everyone to understand immediately. He is rude and critisizes students when he calls on them and they give him an incorrect answer. He makes you feel stupid and is highly unapproachable. Peercy is by far the worst teacher I have ever had at UNC and he is also the rudest.

If you are not an English major or otherwise required to take this class I don't suggest you do so! If you must take the class I recommend reading the text book, as well as researching parts of lecture that don't make sense. Once you get to diagramming look into instructional videos on youtube. You can pass, but you will have to work!

He knows so much about language & grammar that I'm surprised his head doesn't explode. A true genius with a sharp sense of humor. Bring your "A" game because you will be expected to receive & assimilate metric tons of info. Norm often disregards all grades except for the final (which makes sense!), so don't give up if you get bad assgn grade or 2!

This man is a genius. That means two things when it comes to his class: that it can be difficult to keep up at times, and that the amount of knowledge gained is incredible. This is not an easy class, but if you put in the effort and really want to learn, he is very willing to explain and clarify whenever you ask.
