Just a greatly passionate teacher who loves what he teaches. I would recommend having some prior interest in philosophy before taking this class. If you have that interest then this class will be an absolute treat for you. Easily, my favorite class I've taken at Clark thus far.

This class was the worst class I have taken at Clark. His lectures are super boring and unless you're good at philosophy, his diction is very difficult to understand. I don't skip classes but I definitely skipped over a week of this class because it was so boring. Only 4 assignments so if you do badly on any, you won't get an A. Avoid this class!!

Otto Schlumf is my hero! Seriously cool and will put know-it-all students in their place. Prepare to have your mind blown for 50 minutes daily. He may seem dry and boring, but if you can pay attention to a lecture without drooling on yourself you'll be really impressed. Also very lenient on grading, he knows not everyone is a philosophy major.

Boring lectures. You're only graded on four things for this course. 2 papers, a midterm and a final. If you bomb any of them, you're screwed.

I thought Otto was great! Its so rare especially with a subject like philosophy that you get a teacher who seems impartial to one side or another. He graded normally and he told u exactly what he will ask on the exams so it wld be difficult to fail his class...

He truly loves philosophy and is very helpful if you ask questions. Every class is a lecture and there are only 6 grades (including the final), so one slip may screw you up. It's not easy material (went from 28 students in our class to 16), but he knows it well and encourages discussion.

do not take his class if you're a visual learner b/c Shlumpf reads from the textbooks. The exam questions are word for word on the exam study guides, but i wasn't able to stay awake and focused through an entire lecture. he's very dry and monotone. the good: he is willing to postpone due dates and tests for you if you ask ahead of time.

um... Mr. Shlumph has a very narrow approach to life, im not saying its bad, just narrow. im a vegetarian hippie, and found that all this class was, was Mr. Shlumph trying to explain what tripping your balls off feels like, and doing poorly. i didnt go to his class very often, but a few of his ideas snowballed in my mind. love you shlumph

He has a very slow teaching style and the class is all lecture. If this style works for you, great. Take thorough notes. 2 assignments and 2 tests make up your grade. I am an honor student and found this class incredibly challenging. Interesting material if you are up for the challenge, and a tutor is available.

Otto may know his material extremely well, however he teaches REALLY dry. He reads out of the book, and seems disorganized by his teaching abilities. Half the time, you have no idea what he's even discussing. The only enjoyable part of his class is experiencing him wear the same coffee-stained shirt 5 days straight. He must be a ladies man!

Professor Schlumpf knows his subject. I found him to be approachable and very helpful if you were having a problem understanding a concept. He would put things into an entirely different context to help students understand them. He has my respect and I would gladly take a class from him again.

He's a fair grader on essays. He's a fair grader on tests. Not incredibly easy, but not incredibly difficult. He is, however, a very intelligent man, and will help you understand if you have questions.

Professor Schlumpf is a great guy. He has been the most willing of any of my college professors to allow extensions on papers, and to take time during his office hours to sit down and discuss any issues you may have. It's a tough subject, but if you do your work and seek help you'll get it. Plus Philosophy is a really enriching thing to study.

This is not an easy class, particularly in the beginning if you have not had similar courses. Philosophical terminology is like learning a new language and the material often refers back to previous philosophers and their work. To do well you will have to read, and then re-read material before you begin to understand. Take copious notes!

So, I have no doubts that he knows his stuff, he really does, but his teaching style is horrible. He just reads from the book the whole time (the reading that you were supposed to do before class, mind you) and he has a very monotone voice. fell asleep every class. However, if you work hard, you will get a good grade. I passed with a "A"

Don't take into account the negative raters here, I've taken 3 classes from Schlumpf, and if any professor knows his subject, it is undoubtedly him. He'll answer any question you put forth. The other raters found philosophy boring, not the teacher, and shouldn't have rated him poorly because they found the material dull. Hard to think, isn't it?
